EDIT: I have revised this thread in order to make it into a summary of the Shelter Camper Conversion I have done.
EDIT 5-17-09: Updated Pics.
I have a 1970 Duece I picked up from GL. I have added a shelter and converted it to a camper. I did this because I like the look of a Duece carrying...
I was just in all 4 rear wheel ends and found in my Duece, there was very little wheel bearing grease in the bearings and all 4 wheels appeared to have the cavity between the seals filled to the height of the bearing races with gear oil. I have been told many semi truck setups use gear oil to...
Just found out the perfect tool similar to the TM for removing the wheels, drum, etc while assembled. Use a pallet jack, works great. Dont know how to add picts or I would. Just jack up with a bottle jack, run the pallet jack under the wheels, remove the hub nuts, adjust height slightly and...
RE: Re: RE: Gear oil leak
great info, I was wondering if oil was supposed to be between the bearings, I have lots of it and it didnt seem right. Now I know, does anyone have the napa number for the seals or do I need to go to OD iron now that I have it all taken apart?
I will look for the tread, I read it here on SS quite some time ago, I am almost positive it was in the alternative fuels forum. The reason I recall had to do specifically with the Teflon in some of the additives.
I have a friend with an auto shop where I could get unlimited WMO but that one...
I read on one of the forums about additives like slick 50 etc. harming the engine if it is in the oil used as fuel. How do you know if that oil has such additives? Is it worth the risk in using it? Is it really a problem as I read in one of the threads?
WOW, not to change the mood, but I had a very pleasant experience with Dave at GL this weekend, mabye someone talked to him. He was funny and humored me a bit. No problems at all, even when I called him on the fact that the instructions to the GL office were wrong.

RE: Ca House Car additions..
Initeresting information, it seems it is pre-vehicle code in nature though. The vehicle code is pretty small in regards to this.
To answer the question regarding this forum, I would have to expect that you will need the commercial license to move it around, but...
Please check with the DMV not the CHP. CHP only enforces the rules of the vehicle code and that code states:
Any vehicle weighing more than 6000 pounds with 3 axles requires a commercial class B license. End of story.
Many times, normal CHP are not up to date on the true commercial laws...
There was just a whole bunch of those sold out in California, I must have seen like 40 of them on GL at either Camp Pendalton in San Diego or at Barstow...though about getting one for my kids to play in but didnt.
RE: Class B
Depending on the use you want, you can convert it to a RV by placing a camper or ? on it in a semi permanent manner. I am planning on using a shelter bolted to the back of mine and putting a crude camper scenerio together. This would get you out of many of the typical commercial...
Has it ever run yet, Pull start it in second gear. My batteries were flat dead when I picked up my duece and it pull started in about 10 seconds. Mabye youll get lucky. Sometimes a starter can stick when the vehicle batteries are low.
This sounds like a good motivation for me to finish my class b license and do something with the truck that I have moved back and forth on my property and none on the road.
