    Source for photosensitized anodized aluminum

I used to buy the stuff from the local artist/graphics arts supply store when it was Dynamark. They told me they would get the new company's stuff when and if it finally came out. It wasn't cheap, and I changed my prototype labels to a sticky aluminized label that I could run through the...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

If the seals leak badly enough to wash out the grease, you will usually have great wet drool marks down the sides of your tires. It isn't something you can miss. Timkin roller bearings are perfectly happy with differential oil as a lubricant. They wouldn't run hot because of running a...

Weird starter question. Have to hold starter button.

Before you check the grounds, clip a voltmeter to the battery terminal clamps, and hang the voltmeter where you can see it. If the battery voltage stays above 22V when you crank, you have a problem in the wiring somewhere, possibly grounds. But if the voltage at the battery terminal clamps...

    Source for photosensitized anodized aluminum

The anodized label material was made initially by 3M, and later spun off to form a company called Dynamark. The label material was exposed to UV light, and where the light exposed the resist, it became insoluble in the developer. The developer was a dilute isopropyl alcohol solution...

    Stolen Mules

Maybe, but most yards would use a forklift with a dump hopper, or a skid loader, to haul the sort of stuff that a mule could haul around.... And the mule would still need a fork lift, or skid loader, to load it up. Any load of larger volume than could be handled by a forklift, or skid loader...

GL "Management" - the guy behind the curtain...

I would bet that if we added up the yearly purchases of the entire SS community the total would be less than the monthly rate of some of the scrap contracts that GL services. -Chuck

    Stolen Mules

Scrap prices for steel are at an all time high. I doubt this stuff went anywhere but to the nearest scrap yard. I would check there first. Remember, we are fanatical nuts. Nobody, and I mean nobody knows what this stuff is but us. -Chuck

Convincing wife that I need a Deuce

Greg, I think your collection went beyond critical mass many, many years ago. At your level, you would have to bring in a half dozen deuces before the act would even be noticeable. -Chuck

Convincing wife that I need a Deuce

How is that different from just buying it and bringing it home? The fact that you need to hide it tells me that you are (possibly rightfully) afraid of your wife, and want to delay your day of reckoning as long as you can. Good luck with the divorce. -Chuck

Convincing wife that I need a Deuce

Tell her it will make you happy, and offer to help her with something that she wants. It is unlikely that you can come up with a compelling reason of need for a deuce, unless you are regularly hauling heavy things off road. -Chuck

    attempted theft

I had the problem with your style of fuel lockout illustrated to me most thoroughly when I pulled too hard on my fuel shutoff knob, and it came off of the cable end... effectively leaving the fuel turned on always. The fuel shutoff knobs have a shaft that has two holes in it. One coming out...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Hot hubs are generally caused by one of a couple of things: Dragging brakes, too much grease, or too tight of a wheel bearing adjustment. Tell me about how you packed the bearings with grease, and what kind of grease you used. -Chuck

    truck rolls in park

Parking pawls break if you push, or run into a truck that is in park. A friction brake just slips, and then continues holding when the push ends. Broken Park pawls used to be a pretty common problem in parking lot accidents. -Chuck

    truck rolls in park

"Park" is just a pawl that locks the drive shaft from turning. If you get pushed while in park (by a fork lift, perhaps?) , the pawl will often get broken. -Chuck

    My first recovery/MV!!!

Somewhere in the deep history of the M35's and M109's, there were some units that had M35's, and wished they had M109's. There is quite a variety of homemade shelters stuck in the beds of M35's. Dr. Greg calls them KMart 109's. I think it is appropriate. My M35A2 has extended risers, and...

    My first recovery/MV!!!

Congratulations on your new truck, and your new addiction! Looks like a nice one. I like the trucks that were named, or marked with icons. I kind of feel that they were the trucks that were special to someone earlier on in their life. -Chuck

    Maryland deuce owners

Hopefully, SF was just going through some kind of reorganization mess when I called them that October. Maybe they finally came back to their senses and realized that avoiding such a low relative risk vehicle was stupid. Naturally, they wouldn't call me back to tell me that. I had the same sort...

    Oil Leek at highway speeds

That's wonderful news. Sounds like your bearings are in good shape. If the engine sat unused for a long time, the seal surface could have some rust that gobbled up the seal, or the seal could have hardened and just broke. I would bet on the latter. -Chuck

    I bought one!

Friction welding works very nicely, but the weld metals turn bright yellow hot. I doubt the spindle and bearing hub got that hot. Usually they get just hot enough to gall the heck out of the most expensive part. -Chuck

    I bought one!

Cut it opposite your first cut, and put a cold chisel in the cut and give it a whack. A small cut in the spindle isn't going to harm the new bearing hub one bit. After you get the old bearing hub off, look carefully to see if it galled up the spindle. If it did, you maybe able to clean up the...
