Re: RE: towing a 5 ton
Yes, the M911 it is pretty big. Keep in mind that the 5 ton in the picture is an M812, the biggest 5 ton out there. The M812 rides on 14x20 tires, has the 215" wb, and is overwidth.
Bruce is right (as usual). Never tow a heavier vehicle with a lighter vehicle. Unless you are moving something around locally or offroad, call in the big boys.
HEMTTs are very rare in private hands. There have been some to slip through the cracks, but most go back to Oshkosh for remanufacture. Oshkosh produces a like new one for 60%-75% the cost of a new one. Also, older models (i.e. cargo with MHC) are reconfigured into new models like the LHS...
Those towbars are bigger and heavier than you expect! I remember picking 6 of them up last fall at Fort Riley. They are big heavy suckers. Figure about 350# each and they are just about 8' long.
Welcome to Steel Soldiers and congrats on the new purchase. Post those pics when you can. I have used Uship several times, but never for hauling a military vehicle. You might be able to drive it or tow it home, but shipping will eliminate a lot of the potential headaches. Once in your shop...
Key word is parts interchange. Especially if you want to convert to 8x8! Or, you can build a "big dumb trailer" and power it like our man Spicergear. You can also use these to add pinion brakes (I have them on my jeep).
