pull the pan, look for friction material in the fluid. change the filter and put new ATF in, its not an expensive test.

I stand corrected on the gladhands for the deuce, thought they were the same. Where in the system are the front lines plummed? would you want to hook the airline from the towing truck up to the airline on the towed truck just before it enters the master cylinder?

you can get the refrigerant with the dye in it at the auto parts store, not that expensive. might be easier to have a shop leak test it though. I'd replace the dryer since they are cheap, and then pull a vacuum on the system and filler up
just run a air line from the towing trucks brake gladhand to the towed trucks brake gladhand, it will run both trucks brakes.
