Not a one time fluke. I experience the same issues with Schotts. They don't seem to be geared toward the individual buyer. They are looking for sales in quantity.
For $16,000 that must be one fine deuce! Please tell me it is not the black one with the chrome wheels and bumper. Have you seen the thread on the "malibu style deuce"?
No it is not common. I have seen it done when trucks are used in rocky areas and are prone to flats. Having a blowout on the front is not good when you are on the fireline! I have done it with a deuce and even a 1ton dodge 4x4 as an experiment.
To answer your question, they will respond similarly, but I would give a slight edge to a deuce because it is lighter.
If I was choosing a truck to operate on mud, sand, and soft ground, I would start with a deuce with an airshift front end. Then I would add air-assist steering, rear lockers...
Oshkosh is the parent company for Pierce, maker of fire trucks. Pierce has delivered a few trucks called the "Hawk Extreme" which are built on the Oshkosh MVTR chassis. If you have the $$$ you can get the truck! Check out this link for pictures of some recent deliveries...

I think those adapters you have are for the older medium towbars. I can't see how you can use them with the large towbar since the ends of the towbar are different (male vs. female?). Does that make since?
This page is from the towbar manual here on the site. It is a "medium" (up...
RE: 15.5
Sermis-
I think you are going to really like the 15.5s. With those lockout hubs, you should get great performance onroad and offroad. Just be careful if you have a major load. The tires may rub the bed supports.

The large towbars I picked up were NSN 2540-00-378-2012. The obvious difference is 1.5" pins all the way around. I want to get a pic next to my medium for reference/comparison.
A 927 would be sweet, you could maintain highway speed a lot easier than older 5 tons. Schott has never been too interested in individuals wanting a truck and making a deal. I think they are holding out for a big order and this truck will not fit your $8500 budget.
I think if you are using the truck to haul your offroad rigs, I would go with a lwb semi. Look for one that has had the sleeper removed and is now a daycab. That will give you the most frame/deck space to work with. Unless you are only going short distances to wheel, I wouldn't think the M818...
