    Second Gear

Maybe I'm spoiled driving an LDS, but it takes essentially no throttle for me to start my truck in second gear.....and pretty much no clutch slippage.

    Second Gear

I don't mean both from a stop. What is the comparison of the stress on second gear from a stop in a 13,000# truck comparerd to a second gear shift in a loaded 23,000# truck at several MPH?

    Second Gear

Then if the keys shear, they deserved it, end of story. Maybe so, however, I assume responsibility for my vehicles, so I'm not too worried if everyone is overly concerned for the safety of my second gear. I'm more concerned, if you want to put forth the effort, of what the comparison is...

Well, I am an officer now, and that movie wasn't called "An officer and a gentleman" for nothing. :-P

    Second Gear

It's not the input torque that kills it. It's the torque multiplication all the way through the driveline coupled with trying to overcome inertia. I built a wicked 396 in my El Camino. It had an M-20 tranny. I sidestepped that thing so many times at 5000 rpm it wasn't even funny. Most of the...

    Second Gear

No offense taken emr, but I have yet to see any literature from the manufacturer or the Army that states this practice can do harm. However, even if there was, anyone can break anything if they try hard enough. I'm not driving an AED (automated external defibrillator), or any other life saving...

    Second Gear

Yes and no. It's natural tendency is to resist, however, as another person mentioned, let the clutch out a tiny bit, and it will go in. Downshift to second prior to stopping. It takes some getting used to.

    Second Gear

This issue has been hashed repeatedly by those that do it, and by those that claim it hurts the transmission. I use second almost exclusively. Other members have been doing it for many years. Those that claim it harms the transmission, please offer some facts and not hearsay as evidence...

    "Brand New" 1988 MEP-003A's

Really. though Speddmon, what price would you pay for a new set like that? A premium they probably went for, but I'm sure it was worth it for what you get.

Another way to Bob a Deuce!

I'm not sure you can compare a civilian vehicle which was designed for current standards, (ie., my former 66 Chevelle with only lap belts) to a tactical MV for which safety was a distant concern since they weren't primarily built to be driven on roadways. But alas we agree on the finer points...

Another way to Bob a Deuce!

Being safety minded isn't anything to be upset about. As stated though, welding and shortening/ stretching frames is done all the time, and is safe if done properly. My contention is, that the concern of liability of a frame cracking is a moot point when we are hiding behind the veil of it...

Another way to Bob a Deuce!

There's wisdom in that line of thought, however as the devil's advocate, I question, what is there about a deuce that is DOT approved to begin with?

    Frozen air tank drain

My inside tank drain (the "wet" tank) is frozen. I dont imagine it'll be too hard to thaw it, but what can I do to prevent it from happening all the time here in the butt cold midwest?

Another way to Bob a Deuce!

Since the frames are rounded the weld is actually a fillet weld, and penetration isn't as important as good fusion.

You can argue TIG, MIG, SMAW all day long as to heat affected zone, ect, ect......but in reality, no one method is better than the other. They all have their place, and one method may be better than the other for various reasons. We have 600# steam lines that have TIG roots and SMAW (7018) hot...

Are you not the OP? Well, then you, as said OP are obligated to post your own pics, and not quote links to videos, or pics which are in your likeness, however true to your vehicle they may be, as they are not original to you. Senior Chiefs.............incapable of original thought......
