I had the same problem with mine. The issue is the shift fork in the transfer case. The fork has two nylon tabs that are the wear surface. When these tabs wear away the transfer case will pop out of gear. I had the t-case rebuilt when I installed the 4L80E transmission and the nylon tabs were...
I cut off the stock pipes and mufflers in front of the rear axle and replaced them with 40 series Flowmasters. Right out of the mufflers are turn downs. It's a bit louder than stock and it has a great rumble to it. It still sounds like a diesel but it has the great V8 rumble too. --CHEAP TOO! I...
Yeah, I switched to disc brakes in the rear. For the lift it was all new springs all around. The old springs were extremely stiff, and the fronts were sagging too. I went with the "softride" springs to start off with. When I decide to go a bit higher I will do some shackle work and mess with the...
Installed a new starter from dbelectrical.com. Its slightly different dimensions so I had to make a support to replace the one from the stock starter. So far so good.
I used the hitch I installed last weekend (see my post from last week) to tow a U-Haul auto transport trailer. I used it to take my 84 Trans Am to my place to start a LS1 and trans swap and begin turning it into KITT. The truck did very well, no complaining at all!
Put a trailer hitch on my M1028. It was originallya factory hitch on a 93 Suburban. I cut off the burban mounting brackets and made new ones out of 1/4" diamond plate I had laying around. Then welded it all together, welding the hitch to the bumper as well as the brackets. Overkill... Then...
Hey Gottlos, I was out there Saturday and you're truck looks even better in person! You weren't there when I stopped by, I would've liked to discuss some of the mods you have done. The axles look like they came like that from the factory! Nicely done!
I have tried looking on craigslist a few times in the last couple of days with no luck. If you could pm me the link to that listing that would be great! Thanks.
Wow great deal! I would love to find a complete kit. All the ones I have seen for sale are missing lots of parts. And the places that still sell the Banks Sidewinder kit are selling it for way too much $$$.

Use a real chock too. A huge chunk of asphalt isn't good enough as a wheel chock. The other LAV driver in my platoon didn't set his air brakes because the vehicle was inop. (He wasn't thinking, because there was still air in the tanks.) Over the hot summer weekend the asphalt...
My truck is an '85 M1028. Here is all the info I could get:
a. Serial Number - 1GCHD34JXFF414873
b. Registration Number - ground off-not readable
c. NSN without dashes - 320010907894
d. Where you bought it - GSA auction in Norwalk California
e. Bumper numbers - none
Stenciled on the inside...
The only issue I have with my cheap mechanical temp gauge is that it sticks at the bottom sometimes if i haven't driven the truck for a few days. So it wont read anything for a while. And I've tried to tap the gauge but that doesn't help. But I would rather have an electric gauge.
You're pretty far from me, but I found a local Sherwin Williams Chemical Coatings store and the guy new exactly what I wanted the second he saw the part number. He even knew most of the prices off the top of his head. As with most stores, I think you have to talk to the right person, but sadly...
