You should never run the starter that long. 30 sec max. Glow plugs are for cold weather starting. Is there any smoke coming out the exhaust when starting, white, black? Has ether ever been used to assist starting? Sounds more like a fuel issue as I'm pretty sure it isn't below 40 where your at.
