The point about loades vs. unloaded for a preference is something I find interesting. For daily-driving one of these, though, it makes sense; a little less torque for 2X the fuel economy is a no-brainer. (I've literally considered daily driving a M939A2 cargo truck).
Yeah, saw the pics you put up on FB...any estimated completion date? I'm curious how the "road test" or "test drive" will go.
On a side note, since no one else has mentioned it yet...you might already know this, but if not, the red paint to me screams an indication of having been owned by a...
This is a really interesting thread. I've always wondered how the numbers would stack up mileage-wise if one was used as a daily driver (not necessarily always carrying heavy loads, but still on the road all the time, every day more or less).
I heard 95,000 according to a friend of mine who has a bunch of Deuces and 5 tons and apparently found some of the original paperwork in one of the gloveboxes.
It was probably a M49, M50, M35, or an M818.
Great looking truck! I see you're taking her through her paces offroad, when I get my own (probably a M923A2 as well) I have every intention of going offroad plenty. Mine will probably also be a daily driver, is yours?
I didn't end up actually buying it, but there was a '68 M35A2 I was seriously considering that I instantly dubbed as the "Lawn Ornament" since I was/am an entering college student who still doesn't drive yet and it would have thus sat for a year or two at the very least. Otherwise, it would...
LOL yeah, there's always the fuel issue. Planning on getting an A2 variant with the 8.3 Cummins so I'll theoretically get as much as 12MPG, which is OK for a daily driver I guess. At least now it looks like I won't have a long commute, at one point it looked like I might have a 200 mile round...
Spyderman, so is the 5 ton your only vehicle now? I've literally considered a M939 series cargo truck as my first/thus daily driver. (18 y/o entering college student). Am I certifiably insane? rofl
Personally I see no reason why not as long as you're qualified to handle the truck. In my case when I get one it will probably be my first vehicle anyway, so of course it would go everywhere I went. Including probably parking it on campus, no joke.
Yeah, it's good you offered your services though! As far as excuses to get her out on the road, when I get mine (also looking for a 923A2 or 925A2) I'm pretty sure it will be more or less a daily driver...possibly on a long-distance commute at that. People think I'm crazy but I think I'll be...
Welcome to the site! That's pretty neat you got a '58 gasser, they're seemingly a little less common. They are really fun trucks without a doubt. As far as no brakes, I feel for you, I had driving a stick shift introduced to me in a M49 with no brakes! (not driving, but riding...
Welcome to the site! As an entering college student myself, I can sympathize and feel your pain. Best of luck! If you have space, a currently-non-runner/project/lawn ornament truck might be a good bet since it sounds like you're definitely mechanically inclined.
Think it would be a daily...
