Interesting stuff! So if I'm understanding the CA DMV website correctly, with a class A I could legally drive a Deuce, but is that a type of CDL? My understanding (Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken) is that the 2-1/2 ton M35 Deuce is supposed to fall under the gross weight requirements...

So what I still don't understand is:  What's the registration and smog loophole (if any) for a M35A2 Deuce or M939 series 5 ton as a daily driver/commuter car and personal workhorse (firewood, trips to Home Depot for lumber) but nothing commercial (not a tour company, not for hire, not a taxi...

Ha. You pretty much inadvertently described my situation: MV, as a first vehicle, and torn between M35A2 or 939 series 5-ton. Possible acquisition of a '71 Deuce this June, but if not I may look for a 939 series 5 ton.

Thanks for the encouragement! I hope this can work out too. It sounded like whoever was mildly interested and backed out was a total idiot when it comes to mechanical anything, too. The way the current owner (My supervisor at one of my three jobs, I might add) related the phone conversation...

Update: He's still got it. Apparently someone called him about the truck about 2 weeks ago, talked him down to 400 bucks, then never called back. Current owner is going to take pictures and send them to me though, so I know what I'm getting into. Wish me luck! If I don't take it it may end up...

I wouldn't know, I haven't driven one LOL. I'd like to own one though! I think I'd take a 939 series over an 809 series though.
