Here's a pretty good writeup on what I was talking about. Unfortunately, the damage is usually not visible without disassembling the pump.

Well, a transmission rebuild(disassembly and inspection of everything).
Perhaps another member here that is more experienced with transmission rebuilding can offer a better explanation of what may be damaged.
When you install the torque converter into the front of the transmission, there were 2 slots that must engage into the transmission pump. You should have rotated the torque converter and lightly pushed it into the transmission until it "pops" into the pump engagement slots.
