Did your plastic fuel line have brass inserts(to keep it from collapsing)?

You should be able to pop the tapered shaft out by simply whacking the casting with a hammer. No need to pry at all..

I would test that relay for an isolated coil. Just to be sure it's compatible. It should have continuity between the two small terminals and no continuity from either of them to ground.
