So, did anyone figure out whether or not the duece and five ton PTO's are the same or different.
The outputs are opposite each other, so the linkage will need modification, and the oil lines are different, but are the drive gears the same?
I would really like to know before I pull my duece apart...
Justin, i have something that might interest you for a "camper" type rig--bulletproof even!

I have both trailers in my posession, in Roswell, NM if you want to take a look on your way home.
Jimbo
Bruce, it appears you heard correctly.
I made a pickup last week, and lo and behold, there is an M983 sitting there.
I crawl over it, it has the mid-ship recovery winch, and the standard(2.5") fifthwheel.
The yard guy knows military vehicles, so I ask him what's up with the small fifthwheel?
He...
I occasionally see M983's and others fresh from Oshkosh at a truck stop I frequent. I have seen both versions of the M983, and both had the large fifthwheel on them.
Maybe the smaller fifthwheel version was never actually produced.?.?.?.?
And no, I do not have pics, ruined the camera drooling.
Bruce, the HEMTT's all have the 3.5" fifthwheel, only the M1001/2 M.A.N. had the smaller fifthwheel for the pershing missile.
If you change it out, I would be interested in purchasing it from you.
Your trailer options are severely limited, as the fifthwheel height is 60", as I'm sure you are...
I bought an old M51 which had been converted for sand duty on an airport, which had been fitted with an electric heater mounted over the glove box. I assure you, it will run you out of the cab. I will get pics later today.
Ok, this brings up a question I have wondered about;
Is the articulation optional, or is it a permenant feature of the LVS?
I mean, don't the LVS front axles turn the same amount as a HEMTT, or is the articulation necessary for turning.
Or is the articulation there to make the LVS more manuverable?
Either one will work fine, but the question is; where is the pump leaking from? The shaft seal, or the housing? If the housing, it is a simple o-ring replacement. May save you some $$$, but the same amount of work.
[ about 800 miles away, they need a 2100 dollar oversize permit 2 move 1 machine, ill keep yall updated.
I hope the $2100 includes freight, or you are getting taken to the cleaners!
A temporary (three day or single trip) oversize permit is usually less than $150, unles the load requires...
Actually, the winch assy on a M939 is hydraulically powered, so adding another winch into the system would be easy.
Also, the auto trans is a nice option.
I know, I'm talking myself into it, lol.
Actually Ron, I was seriously considering going hydraulic on the rear winch; thus the question about the M51A2 PTO. My parts truck is missing the pump, but that's not a big deal. I will be using air controls for the brake and freewheel clutch.
Tha more I think about this plan, I wonder if I...
Yeah, I'd love to find an M815.
On the other hand, I have the Tulsa 34 winch off an old Mack oilfield truck with mounting and headache rack, so all I need is to figure out the PTO.
I have the dual output setup, which would work, but would prefer to find a T/C PTO.
Wow Ron, I forgot about the T/C PTO!! I have my duece winch truck rigged up that way, I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for waking me up!
I guess the T/C PTO was available on the M815 and the wreckers, correct?
Anybody have a five ton T/C PTO for sale?
Thanks for the answers. My goal is to put a winch on the front of the M813, then remove the bed, and put a winch, fifth wheel, ramps and a rolling tailboard, thus making it a winch tractor.
Are the PTO's the same animal, or are they different between direct drive and overdrive trannys?
I know there are two basic types: dual output(dump) and single output (front winch).
The reason I ask is I have an M51A2 parts truck(dual output), and want to put the PTO in my M813, so I can run...
Well, since my M51A2 never leaves the ranch, I can't really answer as to road speed. It does, however, have plenty of power for my use at 25 MPH and under. It sits on 395/85R20's (46").
From your pic, it appears your truck sits on 16.00R20's (53")--definately power killers.
