Need your VIN number

Rick - This issue seems to be a frequent problem with the older Deuces. This question pops up every week or two - many it seems are being released with only a serial number, model year unknown. You seem to have a significant amount of knowledge on the subject, how about a TA tabulating manufacturers with model year prefixes and serial number range per model year prefix, to the best of information you have available. I.E.,

Kaiser Jeep

Prefix.....Model Year............Serial No. Range
01...........1966- early 67........xxxxx-xxxxx
02...........1967 & 1968...........xxxxx-xxxxx
03............late 68-69?............xxxxx-xxxxx
04...........1969-70..................xxxxx-xxxxx
05...........1970-71..................xxxxx-xxxxx

What are the 1950's trucks frame numbers, going up to 1959? This is very important for me, as anything over 1960 in England means the truck will need to have a safety test every year?

What frame number would you expect this 1985 deuce tractor to start with?

This is pretty much all the info I have. I've only owned one older truck , a 1962 Studebaker M35A1. Kaiser seemed to be pretty consistent with the yearly Vin change. When AM G began the production they evidently continued on with the 05. AM G doesn't seem to follow a yearly designation, but rather used the same first 2 numbers for the complete run of trucks regardless of how long it took. I have a 1977 AM G that starts with 06 and I've confirmed that 09 was used on 1984 through 1986 trucks. I think GL and GSA sell a lot of trucks with year unknown because they don't know. GSA leaves it up to whoever is listing it at Forestry to call it what he wants. My 1986 AM G was listed by GSA as a 1971 Kaiser VIN unknown, but when I sent the correct info they sent a corrected SF97.

A little off the subject maybe but I saw the pic. clinto posted and I was wondering if there is a trick to taking a good clear readable photo of the data plate to show the VIN #(lighting, camera angle, or camera setting, digital camera)
I would like a good pic. of VIN # to go with all the documention for my tital appl. The VIN # is not stamped to deep and a tracing with a pencial and onion paper did not produce a good copy. Was thinking that a plan old high lighter pen or maybe machinest blueing would accent the numbers but if I could get a readable pic. without any outside marking think it would be more presentable.

A camera with a macro setting helps. You could spray some black paint onto the stampings, then sand it off with a block. That would leave the black paint in the depression and take it off the high spots, thus leaving the #'s easily readable. Try shooting without flash. Flash many times will wash out details. If you don't have enough light, use something to steady the camera. I used a flashlight as an indirect lighting source, as I ran out of time to take these today when it was still light outside.

1967 Kaiser M35A2 wo/w 0125-28606 matches frame #s.
1953 Studebaker M108 M33399 also matches frame #s.
Also one quick question,were the VIN's on all of the 50's trucks in front of the stering box?

The 0125 would indicate a 66 or early 67. The high sequential number would indicate a 1967.

I just picked up the deuce in question. I have a correction on the vin. The correct vin is NK0D57 25610. I will get the frame well number soon.

Example; 0524-10045.
I'm only looking at the first 4, in this case 0524. If you don't want your VIN public just list it as 0524-xxxxx. Also please post the mfr of your truck aka AM General, Kaiser Jeep American Products Etc. I've posted the following list before.
0524- M275A2 wo/w
0525- M35A2 wo/w
0528- M49A2C
0530- M185A3 Im not sure if there are any built at this serial range
0532- M109A3
0534- M45
0535- M756A2
0536- M764
0539- M35A2 w/w
0540- M35A2C dropside
0546- M36A2


There has always been conflict but what we've been seeing is that the the last 2 digits of the first 4 denote body style. My list shows 0540 as a drop side, Rice's truck is a dropside and has 0940. In the 0525 the last 2 seem to denote a fixed side cargo (25). Now I'm wondering if the first one or two numbers might represent the mfr. This won't work with the 1950s trucks just the multifuelers from the mid sixties up. So, if you have those last 9 in the format like above please post them for my study. Might be nothing at all but deserves a looksee!

My mate has a M109A3 and was wondering if you can supply any information for his truck?

His truck is an M109A3 - Kaiser Jeep - VIN No - 0532-10030

Any information on this truck like year manufactured, contract no greatly appreciated. By the way, he seems to think it's a mid 1980's truck, can this be confirmed?

Kaiser Jeep was purchased by American Motors in 1970. It is not clear to me when the nameplates were actually changed; thus 1970-1971 would be the transition period with possibly both nameplates being used. Most likely anything prior to 1970 would be a Kaiser Jeep, anything after 1971 would be AM General, 1970-1971 could be either nameplate.

To get a clear picture, rub a little exhaust soot into the lettering, then wipe the face off with the palm of your hand. The soot will help highlight the letters without doing any damage.
To do the same on a gun, use white chalk dust on the tip of a finger.
