Possible to get a military hummer for 10 grand?

I read somewhere - it might have been on this board - that a used HMMWV body can be had for $1,000. Is that true?


The NSN for the new A2 bodies lists for about $9,500 and eBay auctions have used M998 ones listed for $6,000 - $15,000.

I sure would like to know where I can get the body alone for $1,000.



If the body can be had for $1,000, then a new frame can be purchased for about $5,000. Used engine, transmission and transfer case would run....how much?

The rest, like doors, top, hood, seats and the smaller parts can be found here and there either used or new.

I've spent a long time looking for a hmmwv for my collection .......and i've found some. unfortunately, the price starts at $35,000 so ive decided to be satisfied with my m35a2 and m1009 without a hmmwv (for now). If anyone is interested in spending that kind of money, you can google schotts military vehicles or go to www.army4x4.com, you will find hmmwv's, m813's and m923's. these are not parts trucks. they are listed as complete running vehicles ready to drive with the disclaimer that they are for "off road purposes". The place is in Auburn, Me and with a $1,000 deposit, they take you to their lot up the street and you pick out your truck. good luck. [thumbzup]

I think it would be cheaper to buy a civilian H1 and strip it down to make it look like an Hmmwv.

I am not even sure it would be legal to build one up from real hmmwv parts.

Having recently purchased a HUMVEE project, they are quite expensive. It seems every part cost over $1000 (making one worth several million dollars in theroy). By the time I am done with mine (complete rebuild, every nut/bolt and washer), I will probably be in it $30-40K.

I am actually doing two frames (one for me & one for the guy I got mine from) and hope to have rebuilt rolling chassis by summer. You can see some photos of mine at SS, HUMVEE Form, I am an addict.

If you want a HUMVEE, start saving your money, and look around, they are out there. You will just have to pay! Stop buying starbucks coffie, pack a lunch, no dating, ect. Once you have no life, you will have money to spend on your hobby (a hole in the ground into which you pour money).

I am not unhappy about my decession to purchase a HUMVEE, I just can not wait to get the project done (I have a habbit of not finisshing my projects, I have 13 Warbird projects awaiting completion also). Fortunatly my Deuce was running when I purchased it, So I have one toy to play with!

I think it boils down to what you're going to be using it for. If it's a military piece of hardware you're after, then a genuine hmmwv is the ticket. If you're looking for a capable vehicle to go four wheeling and/or camping, then a salvage/burnt Hummer H1 can be found for a low price and rebuilt with used parts or other salvage H1s, have it painted with CUCV paint and it's as good as a humvee.

My 98 Hummer wagon is no different then either of my HMMWV's as far as Federal standards are concerned...AT least in my opionion. The 98 has a Ford Escort steering column, No Anti-lock or ABS brakes, That came in 99 with TT4.
No airbags etc.....
The United Defense/Marine Corp Deal was a SNAFU folks....The barter deal was for the MC to pay United Defense in Mothballed HMMWV's, U.D. was to sell those HMMWV's to a Foreign Gov. to recoup the Cash, That deal fell through, SOOOOOO, Now U.D. wants to get paid so they contracted out to an Auction in the US to dispose of the HMMWV's...Prices started at 5k. I know several folks who bought 20-50 at a time and turned them for 18-30k. My 85 GMV is a very early "Aug85" Model that was part of that Auction.
AM General said HE** No, Tried to get it squashed but I was told there were No EUC's to dictate what could be done with the HMMWV's after the deal was complete. I also know that Numerous states have denied registratiion of HMMWV's at the request of AM General.
I personally think it stupid, As you are all aware that MB/GPW jeeps are no better safety wise, Or how about a Halftrack? IMHO its politics as Usual.....

Good luck getting it insured and getting it registered - it will be a pain in the hind quarters...

In NC, you'd most likely have to have it setup with safety equipment req'd by DOT/NHTSA & then it would still be tough to slide it past the DMV inspectors; they aren't exactly stupid as to what you have & were trying to pass off as a 'kit car' or 'home-built' vehicle...

Well as for the original question, Why not pay a fair price for a good vehicle? as for all the opinions, they should be stated as such as some so rightly do, emmado has the truth about what is going on, budgets are being cut, the military is going to downsize under this administration, there are more than enough of these vehicles in service. and the zero rebuild is alive and well, it is better than selling them off, they get new old vehicles for a fraction of the cost.AND all the Humvees here in the Nj guard are rebuilt with the new motors and transes. they even have """Park""" and they fly and are wayyyy better than the ol power plants that have trouble getting out of there own way....they are worth 25 and up in good condition in my opinion. that is what the market says also. The fellow who is working on one and actually purchased for 10,000 is the best answer, and is an actuall answer. U will need to do work on any and all vehicles, unless crazy lucky . to get a cheap price, i am a firm believer we all get what we pay for, my 3 cents on this one, I am always amazed at how many people know the secret inside story on why companys do things. some of these storys are based on facts. I am sure that is where most start. but people should say it is an opinion when no printed contract s to back up storys....just sayin...Randy...OH AND I AM in for the M37 also. !!!!!...they sure out did the HUMVEEs in the mud at Aberdeen past, ...facts are facts....I got pics of side by side the M 37s driving right buy the spinning to wide tires on the Humvees....

EMR, that Humvee driver was a victim of the top secret anti theft feature, which makes the Humvee get stuck and only pressure on the brake and throttle at the same time will get it moving again. I have a friend that has an M37, with front and rear lockers and it perfoms well, but it diden't do nearly as well before. Still no substitute for a Modern vehicle for the US Military though. My opinion.

I have been looking at the things for the laws here in NC. and it seems that you can pass it off as home built as long as you can keep track of paper work from where you got the items? I think the min safety equip is seat belt 3 point and you have to do a few thing with fuel lines and tank but thats already there on the humvee. Alot of the J8s comeing into the US are kit car title. even though they have a real US cus they have to have that so they ar exempt from emission testing. An so they can use a ton frame under a wrangler

Okay - so here it goes again...

NO ONE at DMV will buy the story of 'it's a kitcar' - the DMV Enforcement guys have to physically see what you have built before filling out/signing off on the forms required for titling the vehicle & will be more than happy to 'smoke it over'. In the case of a HMMWV 'kitcar' they will know the rules better than you regarding what you've built. The boys in DMV know what to look for; you are setting yourself up for some potential disappointment. There's more to it than just 'minimum safety equipment and some fuel lines'... DMV would have you title it - in most cases - with the year that it was built - say 2010 - and you would be required to meet the safety/emissions requirements for model year 2010. If you built a HMMWV from spare parts/tub/etc., on a junk HMMWV chassis from 1998 that HAD a legit title (highly unlikely), you'd be required to meet the chassis/vehicle safety requirements that were applicable to the year of the chassis. And in the case of the HMMWV, haven't we discussed the fact that they don't carry a DOT certification? NOW, if you did manage to find a chassis & VIN plate or some numbers, you're thinking 'Hey! I could use this VIN plate & chassis numbers!' - This is where Boyd Coddington & other car builders got screwed-up in the 'creative thinking' process... and their customers had to forfeit ownership of their 'kit-cars' or had to go through an expensive process in order to legitimize the titles on their cars.

And the J8's you mention are 'possibly' 'US legal & not emissions exempt'. AEV is buying the J8 as a 'kit' from Jeep's Toledo facility & then AEV assembles the truck minus the engine & transmission, which gets installed by a dealer of your choosing. Yet the engine is modern / current production & the inspectors know this - they will be looking for all the current safety & emissions bits, just like a new Wrangler. AEV has stated that they do not want to be the manufacturer of the vehicle and assigner of the original title on the vehicle; it keeps them out of any future legality issues on the J8 - and Chrysler/Jeep won't issue a Manufacturers Title or paperwork either.

As it has been stated in the past by the more esteemed colleagues on this forum - there are legit HMMWV's for sale - buy one of these with legit paperwork & save yourself some time, money & headache.

Build what you want, but I'm done on this...

Tanner, you seem to be completely correct. Build what you want but that doesn't mean you'll EVER be able to legally register it. Some people get away with it, but many don't and end up getting burned. Is it worth the risk for a "cheap HMMWV"? Only you can answer that because it is your money at risk.

In Calif. when you first register the home built vehicle or kit car, you need to show them where the engine came from. If it came from a 1986 diesel chevy truck, that's what emissions it well be required to conform to. There are other things too, some of which are in an attempt to be shure that the parts aren't from stolen cars, but the smog seems to be the most problematic, because most people don't want catalitic converters on their Cobra, but for a piece built Humvee, most people would put in a GM Diesel, so that should be easy. There is no real way to tell if a engine block was a Humvee block or Chevy block and They probably woulden't look at the IP numbers, but they could if they wanted too. I agree that buying a Humvee with a good title and a good paper trail is worth extra money at purchase time. I made many copies of the bill of sale from United Defense to myself, before I turned that paper over to the DMV when I got mine.

hi yall, i was reading this thread and did a little looking around, and found a kinda cheap Hummwv for $18,000. its a Hummer M998 Military Series from 1990 and he says its registered for road use. runs perfect too. i would love to have it but its a little out of my price range. id rather a fellow MV lover get it, its in Sarasota FL. ill post the URL, Hummer M998 Military Series from 1990
