Scavenging Fuel - Can a Deuce Do It?

first off, i do not think the common FILL ports are syphon-able, i believe they have a valve at the top that stops flow if the fuel tank level gets too high, so the Fill port i do not think you would be able to get fuel from,

how ever if you were about to gain other access to the tank, i belive this idea to be the best i herd yet, ( with a chevy TBI fuel Pump ) this idea is the same as most non shallow well pumps work! and it even comes with a strainer and you could install a thin inline filter!

Good thinking, even if ****hitthefan, i would think you would be better of with a horse and a shot gun :) OLD WEST Style ! ~!!!!! :grd:

I would obtain a new in tank pump for a TBI chevy

COnnect a long hose securely and also your electrical connection. Drop in tank of your choice and pump to your hearts conent.

That particular model pump is durable, simple and dirt cheap, even new. I am considering designing a replacement for the intank pump for a deuce using two of these in series electriically wyed together at the liquid output to the deuce fuel system. It would pump at least a gallon a minute with two of them.

those pumps have a very low output and are far from durable. 1 gallon per min @ 50 gallons, no thanks. save your money and time and just buy a holley style of pump.

Dave thats a sweet pump!

PB, DB, we got just at a year and a half, before things start getting truly bad I figure! Then so bad it wont make a difference comes in at the less than 2yr timeframe! Prep on!:cookoo:

If 7 dead cultures could figure it out and knew more than we still do, I reckon 2012 theory holds water! Worse case if nothing happens, I am prepared for just about anything, always have a bite to eat, and cool toys to play with![thumbzup]

I'm still thinking about the issue of having to snip a padlock. Usually things go from bad to progressively worse, so at the beginning of a grid-down situation, you might have a minimum wage gas station clerk hand you the key to the cap. Especially if you're in a wierd, green truck.

If the clerk thinks you're going to help HIM get gas to get home as well, he should be more than cooperative!

One thing to consider is how the commercial distribution of fuel works in this country.

Fuel travels from refineries though pipelines to terminals where it is loaded onto tanker trucks that carry it out to the service stations.

The pipelines are dependent on the grid to run the pumps (there may be some emergency backup jennys....I don't know for sure one way or the other).

In a very extreme situation (total breakdown of law and order) you might be able to find an access to the pipeline and pump out of it.....there would be a lot of fuel in several hundred miles of pipe.

The trucks run 24/7 delivering fuel since most service stations don't hold a lot of fuel...prob a day or two supply at most depending on where they are located. Urban areas will run out a lot sooner than rural locations. I have seen tankers dropping fuel at all hours of the night.

In a bad case sceniario the stations may already be out of fuel by the time scrounging becomes necessary.

This is where the deuce shines because it will burn stuff other people will bypass.

Go into Wally-world and do a mind exercise...try to see how much stuff you can find that the duece will burn (hint..check sporting goods, automotive, outdoor and grocery sections).

The Boy Scout motto prevails: Be prepared!!!

If TSHTF,

Where exactly are you going? Why do you need a Deuce to get there?

The mountains? I don't think so. Every redneck with a 30-06 will already be there. There won't be a mule deer or even a jackrabbit for a thousand miles. Hypothermia, snowed-in in the winter, inadequate food supply. You'd have better chances taking over a supermarket with your buddies.

The midwest? You're gonna grow a garden for a group of 100 Mad Max scavengers to raid in 8 months?

The northeast? Yeah right. Look what happened to George Washington at Valley Forge. And that was way south compared to upstate NY.

The coastlines? Yeah, you and a billion other people trying to catch tuna with makeshift rafts & improvised trolling nets & fighting with countless refugees over a single sardine.

It would be better to form small communities & pool resources. In other words, revert back to the way humans were supposed to live as opposed to this artificial urban-sprawl civilization we now have.

At least have your "hideout" already established beforehand so that all you would need is one tank of fuel to get there.

I'm sorry but cruising around in the post-apocalyptic wasteland by yourself in a 55 mph Army truck probably will not be successful for long.

Personally, I'm going blast off into outer space in the Pastor Richards Salvation Statue and join a group of morally-correct, affluent humans ruled by me. [thumbzup]

Original Humanoids were nomadic hunter gatherers! Go where the food goes, eat whats available including themselves! Cannibalism yes! Not my cup of tea, but lean protein as a last resort!

I was reading a book about desert survival, " If you think like a desert bug then you will find food and water everywhere " think about makes since! Bugs are not very tasty by the way!

In Georgia over the last few years there has been two times I was glad I had a deuce. Last year it flooded roads closed quickly in Cobb. Second it a hurricane huts people freak and buy all the fuel.

Always nice to know I have a way out of Metro Atlanta.

Let's assume that there is a bad grid-down situation where you aren't in a huge rush to get out of town. If you're willing to help others get gas, the gas station owner can't get the gas himself (without electricity), and he tells you to bring his gas up.

Since no fuel delivery specialists have chimed in yet, (or at least, no one's come right out and identified themselves as an expert) we don't know if there will be an anti-siphon device on the replenishment port.

If there's no electricity, would the pump still be under pressure? would the pressure be negligible? could you use a 20k lb (loaded) truck to "nudge the pump" and gain access to the fuel? I would think that if you're going slow (i.e. not 35 mph) there would be minimal hazard to cause an explosion. (hopefully not causing many sparks with no electricity)

Either way, if I were to risk this task, I would be bumping the pump out of position with the rear of the truck.

Any firefighters that can provide insight to this? I know that "vehicle v. Fuel pump" is not a rare call for a FD to respond to.

Personally I would stay away from local fuel stations. How many people are going to be there with the exact same idea that we have here.
I believe that the best place to look for fuel would be at an airport. Not too many people are going to be out looking for jet fuel to put in their Honda Civic. BUT, we would be able to use any of the above mentioned ideas to get the jet fuel from the storage tanks.

I know that the small local airport here where I live has above ground storage tanks and I have confidence that I could get them to gravity flow with little effort.

Probably the best and worst prepared group of people for when the WTSHTF are the old order Amish.

They are mostly still off the grid and are fairly self-sufficient.....they are also pacifists which make them an ideal target for bad people. The best they can hope for is a group of decent folks that will protect them and barter that protection for food.

Ref the airport as a fuel source you are correct...both jet fuel and aviation gas can be burned in the deuce. The jet fuel (souped up kerosene) needs a little UMO or WVO added to it.

I know the data plate on a deuce says not to use aviation grade gas but I have done it (ran out of diesel at a remote airport in Germany). You just have to cut it at least 50/50 with oil to knock down the octane.

I agree that there will be a lot of people out in the woods competing for food but a majority of the citified masses will sit in place waiting for the government to pull their fat out of the fire. By the time they realize that no help is coming it will be too late for a lot of them.

The problem with food storage is that you have to have alot of it stored up. Depending on the time of year TSHTF will determine if you can supplement your stored food with fresh stuff frome a garden (assuming you have planted a garden and can keep other people from helping themselves).

If TSHTF in the winter you are going to have to have enough to carry you through till a garden comes in (assuming you have the means and seeds to plant a gardern). The more people you have to provide for the more you will need to put by.

Bulk foods can be nitro-packed in 5 gallon pails lined with Mylar bags. Dried beans, rice, pasta, flour, meal and other staples can be stored for a long time this way. You can also store seeds this way to plant when conditions permit.

Store bought canned goods have various shelf lifes. Check out this site: Shelf Life of Canned and Dry Foods by Robert Wayne Atkins, P.E. - Grandpappy

Keeping livestock is a good idea but you have to have food stored or available for them too.

Survival requires a lot of forethought and planning.
