Actually, the new demil requirement is guages removed and frame cut in certain spots, according to the GL people at Fort Sam.
Wait a minute! Do deuces have glow in the dark gauges? Maybe this is a return of the radium hysteria that affected electronics, like the R390 receivers?

Was this an attempt at humor? I don't see how this is even remotely possible.

On a side note, my interest in 5 tons is growing...

I'm not sure if I believe the demil code change, at least not permanently. These truck have been surplused out for 50 years or more, I doubt they have suddenly become a threat to FedGov.

I can imagine some GS-6 sitting in a cubicle within the Pentagon, watching CNN, and if he sees a beat up, worn out deuce driving around a war zone in Somalia, then "SIR! We gotta change the demil code on these old trucks!"

I know who just picked up the new salvage contract at Ft Sam and have been assured that if the deuces do get scrapped that I'll have first choice of anything before it goes to the crusher. If this happens, everyone fill out your Christmas list and I'll try to fill it (for a small fee of course;-))

If it does come to that I say grab as much as you can from every truck, someone on here is always needing parts from small to large parts.

Start a side business. earn extra income. work from home.

I can think of a couple of reasons why it is possible. First a couple of background questions for you: Are you familiar with the HMMWV? How about the M151?

How are these two vehicles really all that different from the deuce? Both are slow, both are green, both spent years driving up and down the highways of the US, and both cannot be bought on surplus unless they have been chopped up.

I agree with DOT's assessment that the M151 is inherently unsafe, but not that it should be chopped up. What is the HMMWV's excuse? It is being chopped up because AM General bitched to its pet congress critters and told them letting the military Hummer onto the market would completely kill off its civilian sales of the Hummer I, and the civilian sales of the Hummer I would keep the prices on the HMMWV low... The civilian Hummer I is long dead, so why are the HMMWV's still being chopped up?

Now, let's go to Wisconsin. Their motor vehicle administration has decided that MV's newer than 1967 cannot be titled because they lack a sticker that says they are certified by the Federal government for highway use. They are currently embattled in court on this very issue. Do you think that they don't know where these trucks are coming from? Do you think that they haven't been in touch with Congress about this subject? They are probably going to lose in court, so if they truly believe that MV's are inherently unsafe, their next logical course of action is to cut off the source of the flood of MV's that are showing up on their roads.

Our older deuces have an excuse for their obsolete braking and safety systems. They were built to the standards of all trucks in those pre 1969 days, but what about those that were built from 1970 through 198<something>? They should have compartmented braking systems, 3 point seatbelts, padded dashes, and all of the other safety systems that civvy trucks of their date of manufacture have. The only reason they don't is because the military didn't want to upgrade the older deuces, and didn't want to have all of that variety in their supply depots.

I have no idea why the deuces are currently under review. Nor does anyone else on this site. But I can see why they might be made Demil F.

If deuces are made Demil F, all of our unchopped deuces just became worth big bucks. Look at the prices on unchopped HMMWV's!

Thank you Chuck; well put. But remember, we do know that deuces HAVE been changed to Demil F, and the discussion is if they stay that way, get changed to something else, or back to where they were. Yes, stop chopping and wipe down your old beauties with a clean chamois.

Do we know that the Demil Code is now "F"? I'm still seeing Demil "Q" with an integer of "0", under review.

Your not going to see HMMWV's surplused out in the future because Uncle Sam has proven that it's cheaper for the taxpayer to get a HMMWV rebuilt to new condition with zero hour/zero miles than to buy a brand nely built one from AMG, and Uncle Sam gets the same quality product. It's like that for just about all the tactical vehicles and trailers from HMMWV to HEMTT to MTVR to FMTV to HET to all your armored vehicles, and everything inbetween.

Bottom line, I anticipate that the flow of complete vehicles will end in the next few years due to the rebuilding of them all. No need to get rid of "old trucks" when they can be rebuilt cheaper than buying new. The ones that are too trashed to get rebuild get stripped of all useable components and are hulks.

Tigerfan,

According to the DRMS Ombudsman, they have been changed to DEMIL F. Her response to me concerning this question is in this post. This is first hand information.
