Memorial Day 2011 - Post HERE !

My wife and I watched the Momorial Day special on PBS television last night. We have been watching that particular program for years it seems like . Needless to say it was a wonderful program and most if not all of the stories presented about those veterans were those who made the ultimate sacrifice and brought tears to our eyes! God Bless them and their families and God Bless The United States of America!

Memorial day trip

I take a small display down every yr to Plentywood MT about 125 miles south and always take a truck down for the kids to crawl all over. This yr the weather was very bad ,cold and rain the whole trip down and of course the heater in the M725 would not fire up and the wipers sucked. Oh well the few people that were there loved the truck and the display. Unlike Sayreville NJ Plentywood loves the old trucks and even us Canadians are welcome down there. Eddy

I went with a couple friends to a massive church event in Wake Forest , NC. 3 or 4 churches get together and have a big event on a farm. They asked us for the 2nd year to come out and give rides in MV's to everyone there.
We had a
GPW
M35A2C
M35A2 and a
M35A3 there for rides. We ran from 0930 to 1600 with a hour and a hald break for a big souther bbq lunch they put on. Sure was a nice sunny 94 degree day.

My Memorial Day

As you know from my posts, my M35A2 is still not back up and running. The mechanic did not show this weekend, so we worked on other things; we began the resuscitation of an M66 ring and legs to install on the truck.

My wife and her friend went to the D-Day museum in New Orleans yesterday. I stayed home getting things ready for my MBA class that I have to teach starting tomorrow. I did take a little time to go outside and tap out some screw holes on the M66 ring and start the process of drilling out broken screws and re-tapping.

On Memorial Day, I felt an extra sense of purpose as I worked on that M66 ring. It seems like I owe a lot of vets quite a bit to make sure that this restoration is as good as I can afford it to be. You seem back in the 1980's, when I served as a CAF wing leader, the WWII vets were like Nam vets today. Now, 30 years later, the WWII vets are going very quickly.

Years ago, I had the pleasure to meet men who were on both sides of the fight.
Today I am sure that most are gone.

I met Pappy Boyington. I have his books signed to me personally.
I met George Gay, the sole survivor of Torpedo 8 from the Battle of Midway. I have his book signed to me personally.
I met Masajiro Kawato, the Japanese ace who shot down Pappy Boyington. I have his book signed to me personally.
I have a litho of the Memphis Belle signed by the MB's pilot.

As a member of the Deutcheshaus in New Orleans, I met two German WWII vets, both are now gone. One was named Max - he was a German U-Boat sailor who managed to escape a sinking U-Boat and spent much of the war in a POW camp. The other was Carl, who was in training for the Luftwaffe, but when the invasion came at Normandy, was handed a rifle.

Sorry for babbling. Much of my WWII vet tribute were in my memories.

I will just post this one good pic that I have right now. It is Cub Scout Troop 3727 Stow Ohio in the Cuyahoga Falls Memorial Day Parade. They had the experience of a lifetime. I explained to them before the parade the reason we have Memorial Day.

Thanks to all of the Veterans Past and Present!

A few photos from the display we put on at a cemetery in Casa Grande, AZ. I took the M818 and my buddy took his M3A1. I really need to paint the equipment trailer...

I'm an hour away from anywhere, so it was a quiet Memorial Day that I spend installing a rebuilt starter on my M818.

I attached a flag to the bumper of one of my consequtive VIN dueces and put it in the front yard near our mailbox for the weekend. My wife called it Redneck Yard Art, but she liked it. A 17/18 year old neighbor boy came by admiring it, so I took him for a spin around the front yard. My wife said it looked really great roaring by with the flag waving proudly.

Roswell Ga - Donna Ross who was a nurse in 1967 was the key speaker - her story I put on my thread about the M43 if you want to read it.

Drew was present with his unit and como unit and that homeless guy from the Ga Rally last year.

Spectacular event.
Pipers shown playing Taps and you just would have had to been there to understand - that is why so many few pics as I was too busy celebrating.

You people are making me jealous! Ha ha I can't wait to have a fleet of military vehicles to put in parades! We don't do Memorial day parades around here, but this time next year I will hopefully have some pics of my own to share. I'll drive wherever I gotta go to participate in a Memorial day parade![thumbzup]

We don't have any Memorial Day parades around here either, all of the events (and they are many) are simple memorials to the Fallen. At first I was a bit annoyed at the lack of a parade but after thinking on it a bit I have decided that a memorial is the way to go. We have big parades for our Country on Independence Day and for our Soldiers on Veteran's/Armistice Day, I think Memorial Day is for remembering and honoring the Soldiers who have Fallen, Sailors still "on patrol", Airmen "Gone West", River Rats who have "Crossed The River"... We did a lot of that around here.

Military Vehicle Collectors of Colorado rolled 20 vehicles for the Commerce City Parade (bigger than Denver's). The parade's lead vehicle was a member's Pinz tranporting the 4 Grand Marshalls, a family of 4 guys who have served from WWII through both current conflicts. Didn't get pictures of that as the club unit was many entries back. Here are two links to two different a local FOX 31 videos of the parade.
