Back in 1986 when I first saw a HMMWV, I had to have one. Unfortunately back then, they weren't going to be available to civilians for quite a while yet, and I was just a poor boy with a part time job going to school anyhow, so it didn't matter.

The desert racing crowd uses limiting straps to prevent the shocks from being the travel limiters. If enough force is applied, the shock can fail. Bad idea.
The Spring meet in April is the biggie. Largest MV gathering / swap meet in the West. But the Fall meet is a good place to get your feet wet. Come on out to any of our events and take a look. You don't even have to bring an MV.

I recently discovered that I have a Fiat Ram 2500 4x4 pickup with a 5.9 Cummins TD, and I really like that truck. It tows MV projects like nobody's business! If the 4x4 Fiats are that good, the 6x6 units must be spectacular! rofl
The hole in your picture goes into the bellhousing where your clutch and flywheel lives. It's supposed to be open. You don't want oil in there... bad for business. The hole exists because if you were turning your deuce into a naval vessel (fording) you would want to plug that hole to avoid...
