I can tell you about what it does to a DT466 with nearly the same pump. I did a #0 plate, tightened the gov springs, and hiked the timing to 22*. Keep in mind, this truck weighs just over 27k pounds in the vids, so it wont seem too fast. I do say, it will run like you think it should have from...
cool site!
Yeah, the 8.3 shares nearly the same pump as a 5.9. Not all do, and that's where you need to look. Make sure it's a P-pump, and not the electronic junk.
Mods are simple. Grind down the fuel plate flat, and install it full forward. Hike up the timing to around 17-19*, and buy a set of...
When I was in the ol Army, I actually pulled off the muffler of an M923A1, and put the turnout back on the flange. Of course, I had to take it for a spin too. Wow, that was a mean sounding growl! Go with a bigger pipe if you do str8 pipe it, because it deepens the note.
Gotta tell you from...
Those are my videos and how-to's. As Mudguppy says, it's not going to have an MW pump, so the fuel and timing will be different. It will be as described in the 6BT Cummins section, and also the DT466 from 93-97. The 8.3 turns into a real animal with the fuel plate slid full forward.
Those old multifuels can only spin to 2800, and sometimes dont stay together there. It needed more tire speed, from what I saw. A better engine suited for more rpm would be a Cummins 6BT, or a DT360 International. They can see well past 3k and live. I've even had my modded DT466 running at...
Problem with most of the older ones is the lack of intercooler. You can make pretty big power from the 6.6 or 7.8, but they get hot real fast. The stock turbo is pretty small. Overall, they are great little engines. I've been eyeballing a 1992 6.6 to swap in my pickup.8)
If you drive a higher powered truck like an idiot, stuff is going to break really fast. That means no doing 6X6 burnouts!
If adjusted properly, you can make it live a long & happy life.
I didnt hack anything, I'm not really that good with computers. I just copied the info and picture from here as a reference point. It only takes a minute to remove it if it's deemed wrong, offensive, or the info should only be here....I can just have a direct link instead. I'm just tryin to help.
The 466E is fly by wire, so it does feel like an empty pedal. Mash the pedal, and wait a few seconds for it to respond. A mechanical 466 doesn't feel like it's up to par until the fuel has been adjusted, or so they seem. Throttle response gets better on the 466E when you raise fuel pressure at...
That's about what I was figuring, just throwing ideas out. Not that I have a Deuce, but I used to be a 63B back in the 90s. Wish I knew of the fuel screw back then!
Has the rpm been touched on before? I was looking at Tpub from reading the "upping the fuel" thread, and it looks like you can use a stiffer inner spring(NSN or Fed stock number: 2910-836-7316) from an "A" style pump on the other pumps to make your own "Governer Spring Kit". They all share the...
For sure, get the edumakashun. Then you can get a nice paying job to support your toy habit. My project is simply a DT466 in a Super Duty, and I've had the truck for 2 years now with no engine.
Stock, a mechanical 466 will go to 2750-2850 with no load. You can tightetn the gov springs to get a...
I'll throw in a few cents worth. The 466 has the most power potential for axle snapping fun. Word of caution of using the electronic engines; the throttle response is slow! My work truck is a 300hp 466E, and it takes a good 3-5 sec. to get the turbo spooled up. Doesn't sound like much, until...
There are more and more becoming available as fleets retire older trucks. I may be picking up a good running 466(1995) for a grand here real soon. I've seen them for the best prices at bus auctions and pulloff.com
The older mechanical 466s only went to 270hp. If you get in touch with Hypermax...
Actually, they've been in trucks since 77, and in tractors since 75. True, a stock 466 may seem a little doggy, but once you play with the pump, or replace the pump with a better one, it'll be a screamer. I talked with a sled pulling supplier Hypermax, and he told me that you can make almost...
A 466 is becoming fairly cost effective in terms of purchase price. The bad part is, size, and if you turn up the power levels, 300hp on a mechanical 466 is around 900 pounds of axle breaking torque.
