The transfer cases and transmissions are separate items on a deuce. The main issue I see looking at mine is the top heavy nature of the beast. I'm sure there is a transfer case jack especially made for deuce, probably a $10,000 item for Uncle Sam.
I don't know how difficult sleeve assemblies are to find. That, and the cost, would be the determining factors. I would look for a blown engine, you might find some good used parts,
You might be better off getting another engine if you find much more wrong. Not that they are that hard to rebuild, just finding some parts is expensive. Check with Spicergear, I think he still has a good, low hours, turbo engine.
A lot of the old 2 stroke golf carts used "engine reverse" to back up. he reverse switch reversed the starter/generator fields and cranked the buggy backwards. On a 4 stroke, it could be rough on the engine, sucking the oil out of the bearings instead of pressurizing them....

A little shot of ether (starting fluid) will drop them like a rock. The best way I have found to clean out the wasps is a shop vac. Make sure the filter is in place first. Take a 6-8' piece of 1 1/4" pvc pipe, duct tape to wand. Fire up shop vac. Get end of pipe close to nest, but do not touch...
You should get a deuce if you are willing to accept the challenges.
You don't drop the hammer and get there in a hurry.
You don't have all the creature comforts of a pickup.
They can be hot, although opening the windshields out is better than a convertible with the top down, and you can do...
I am not partial to the sand color, here in Ga. the greens are a better match for the terrain. I have some work to do at MCLB Albany, and I can get outdated 383 green CARC and catalyst from them. I am probably going to do that route, although taking the truck all the way down to the metal and...
Mine is getting ready for a repaint as well. I am torn between the old semi gloss OD and the new USMC camo CARC. Since I can get the CARC for free, it may win out. Less prep work as well.

Good looking ride!
Yours too Jimbo!
All vehicles being deployed overseasto the combat zones get new skins. Even the spares are getting changed out. Some of the tires I picked up from Berg supply were brand new 900's, still had the hairs. They had to have been spares from a deuce or a trailer. Many still had tubes and flaps.
An awful lot of deuces ended up with fire departments in rural areas. The off road ability, plus the ease of dropping in a water tank were great draws. The fact they were free didn't hurt. In Fla., we had quite a few old deuces (ours was an M-34!) and a few power wagons as well. here in W Ga...

Do you have troop seat hardware for an A2? I can do the wood, the metal is what I need. I can handle sandblasting it and getting it all painted.
I bought 16 tires from Berg Supply, picked out the ones I wanted. Hs's a good kid, if you have any problems give him a call. He will do his best to make things right.
As for things getting lost...
I had an entire 53' trailer full of unpainted engine hatches for Yamaha Wave Runners get lost...
It's been a hoot! I've driven back and forth to work 3 times, taken the 11 yr old daughter to school once. I get a lot of waves. No real issues at all. the front boots are on order, then it's time to get new canvas for the pax seat. Windshield gaskets are next.
Title transfer was $18...
Works for me.
