That lever is to engage the PTO for the dump. It has 4 positions, High, Low, Neutral and Reverse. I leave it in the high side all the time and use the lever on the left side of the driver's seat to open or bypass the hydraulic valve to raise or lower the bed.

I agree with Bcurtman's assessment on the push connect fittings. They are super easy to use and cheap to replace if one goes bad (I've never had one go bad, but I have cracked a couple if they get hit with something). I also use standard airline tubing - Linear Low Density Polyethyene - in 3/8...
