From the factory they did not use the adjuster so you will see no remnants of it. The only way to get the right adjustment is to get the gauge from Chevrolet (this is not a military only part) and set it as described. These critters were not used for years prior to the explosion of car people...

I can add my two cents, sprags can be tricky. I had one that did not work so I posted some questions here -got alot of feedback telling me to adjust it, got under the truck and spent a couple hours adjusting this way and that way by the TMJ and got it working.
