The suppressors (capacitors) are only used for noise reduction for radios. It wont cause starter damage. Replacing suppressors w/ fuseable links will make smoke as you are making a short. Have you replaced the starter relay under the dash?

I would get a schematic and check you wire harness, sounds like some bad wires somwhere. Converting to 12vdc only makes future troubleshooting more difficult.

Do those trucks have an oil cooler in the radiator? I had the same problem on a forklift. Turns out it was the oil cooler in the radiator had broken causing it to overflow.
Appendix e-13 and e-14 in the
TM 9-2320-289-34 is the service lighting schematic for your truck. It is downloadable from this site. It should guide you in the correct direction, of wiring anyway.

Check the plug on the alternator. Make sure you have 12 volts on the red wire and the plug is making good contact with the alternator. The brown wire goes to your light. Hope this helps.

The mud there reminds me of muskeg in Alaska. When I was driving in it looked like a plain grass trail. The first ten feet was hard so I went back in the truck and started driving. Then I found a soft spot and down it went. The severe muddiness is from a thousand foot prints.
