Like Tintsar said, I used to do them myself, but not anymore.
Dodger73, I see that you are from Boston. I'm on the South Shore. Now I take my driveshafts to South Shore Bearing in Quincy Ma. It will run you about $100 to get 2 new Spicer U joints installed and have the driveshaft balanced...
Where your stock axles assymbaly regeared to 3.73's, or did someone swap in axles from another truck at some point?
The reason I ask is that most of the 10 bolts I've seen with 3.73's came from 89-91 blazers/suburbans that used 30 spline axles (not the 28 spline like a stock M1009).
You should be able to find a 10 bolt rear end dirt cheap, although 3.73 gears are fairly rare. I stopped pulling 10 bolts from parts trucks years ago, I just couldn't get any $$ for them. They used to fetch $250 in the early 1990's.
I'm in Ma, if you were closer, I'd give you one.
I'm gonna guess a 10 bolt complete with brakes weighs in at 225.
Others have pointed you in the right direction.
I would bring:
- complete rear end drum to drum
-4 new u bolts
- extra caps for rear u joint.
-battery powered grinder with cut off wheels & extra batteries (& safety glasses).
-a...
The wiper switch is a big job, at least for me it was. I spent half a day fighting with it before I gave up.
I pulled a used column from a parts truck and installed it in my M1028. Changing columns was a 2 hour job taking my time.
Cucvrus is leading you in the right direction.
I would try to find a complete wiring harness from a truck being parted out.
Sadly, far to many trucks are parted out so the offroad guys can get the Dana 60 / 14 bolt axles. I think a complete wiring harnessis a fairly easy find.
Start searching...
Rick,
hopefully you still check in here from time to time to offer advice. I don't have many post on this site, but I am on here daily and your post have helped me keep my trucks running great.
Thank you.
This is a tough one.
As others have said, I've parted out nicer trucks in the past.
That being said, most of the value of a parted out CUCV (excluding M1009's) is in the axles. The Dana 60/14 bolt. Combo sells for $2000 here in Massachusetts.
Allot of the work this truck needs involves the...
One curve ball I ran into was my truck (1984 M1028 ) didn't have the set screw for the ignition lock.
Looking around online it seems that GM didn't use the set screw untill mid 1984. Prior to the set screw you have to punch a hole in the column to release the ignition lock. This is where...
The tool mentioned above is called the lock plate removal tool. I bought mine at Sears for $20.
As far as replacing the directional switch, its a pain to do. When I had to do mine I searched some old threads here. I knew when Cucvrus said that he finds it easier to just swap in a used...
Cucvrus, say it ain't so.
Before you hang it up I had a couple of questions about adding a lift kit, turning up my injector pump, and converting my truck to 12 volts.
Ha ha, just kidding. Keep up the great advice. You help allot of us guys keep our trucks going.
Thanks.
