This may be coincidental, but I had the exact same issue when I acquired my M1010. I chased the issue until I got rid of the Duvac and changed my alternators out, and then the issue disappeared. That was over a year a ago, and has been working fine ever since...
Well gents, I looked around the shop today and here's what I have:
*4A032 engine with electronic ignition. Used, but excellent condition. Last time I started it was two years ago. Ran well, but this has the carb with the sticky float. $150
*Champion R15B compressor pump with flywheel, for HGR...
It's been a while since I had my A3 but I think there was a check valve in the tubing, although I never took it apart. Kept the pump from losing prime. It's easily traced if the pump is still attached to the underside of the instrument panel.
One terminal is for the high beam, the other for the low beam. The light grounds through the mounting stud.
I would use relays just to keep the current from running through the switch. A DPDT or a SPDT would work.
Those lamps get hot so I wouldn't have both high and low on at the same time.
I won't have vendor spaces this year so if anyone is looking for new axle nut sockets, padlocks, or NOS ground rod slide hammers, send me a PM and I'll bring them.

Section 4-43 of the TM shows both styles, and notes that "configurations may vary", while figure 12 and 12-1 in the parts illustrations only refers to the castle nut.
