1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Yeah... My 5-ton floor jack couldn't even come close to pushing the frame up enough to get that required space under the front diff. You guys don't want to know how I did it...but suffice to say that a cherry picker can come in handy from time to time! Once I got it lifted, I did put some 5-ton...

Victory! It only cost me about an hour under Merle and one skinned knuckle. I'll post pics in a few...after I get cleaned up. I did use some of my old BDAR training and a little ingenuity to get him up in the air enough to slide the starter out and back in...probably need to get myself one of...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

DB electric shipped my starter out right quick - it got here Fri evening. I'm gonna be a busy puppy tomorrow!

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

According to FEDEX, my starter should land today....too bad I have to head down to my Mom's place and help her set up for an oyster roast. Oh well, I have Monday off (hooray for Federal Holidays), and I'll Git 'R Dun then!

Thanks Hasdrubal... neat nod to Hannibal's less well known (and less successful) brother! I purchased a starter from DB electric - hope they get it here in time for me to work on it over Veterans Day. In the meantime, I'm going to have the current (dead) one rebuilt by the electric shop in...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Alright I'm ordering a new starter, and I'll have this one rebuilt to go in my private CUCV PLL, along with a full set of glow plugs and a few other goodies. Q1) Realizing that opinions are like @$$holes, talk to me about good starter manufacturers? I think the ChiCom version currently under...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Thanks Firejareen - that's good news. I like what you have done with your 1028! It's kind of where I want to go with Merle!

And you get the cigar...I checked the circuit all the way to the starter...it was good to go. I decided to try and jump the starter direct (24v hot off the battery), and it didn't even wiggle. Haha! I think I have a bad selenoid, if not a bad starter itself! Did I do that right? I'm not looking...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

OK - got the man cub out early this morning (before his sister's soccer game) and we checked the doghead starter relay. We had 25v on the big red terminal. Check When he cranked it, there was a resounding 'click' and there were 24.6v reading on the big purple terminal. Check The multimeter...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Dang it....I'll go back and recheck the doghead relay tomorrow, in the daylight. If I can bridge the relay and get it to fire, I'll be in business...but I am beginning to run out of patience with these danged gremlins. I knew CUCV's had a few idiosyncrasies, but this is just maddening. I hope it...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

OK - starting to get frustrated (insert anguished groan)...batteries are fine (both at 12.6v and 25.2 across both). They draw current when the glow plugs cycle (bit of a load test, sans loading them with the currently inop starter system). I have inspected and replaced all the fuses, even...

Headed out to a kids soccer game, then I'm grabbing a multimeter and poking my head under a CUCV hood. Wish me luck!

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Thanks doghead. No - the engine does not turn over - I turn on the switch, the GEN2 light comes on, the glow plugs cycle (wait light goes out after 7-10 sec), but when I twist the key all the way to fire the starter, I only get a click.

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Tonight's update: I checked with Dudley, and he did the doghead update and installed a new starter from urqualitysolutions (off of fleabay). He has put 5 in CUCV's so far and not had one burn out. This evening, after work, I crawled under the dashboard and traced all the leads I could find -...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Thanks guys - yes, Dudley did put in a new starter (possible culprit) this Summer, but he also told me he did the doghead conversion... will check that for any possible loose connections. Hmmm... the mystery deepens. We shall see when I crawl back under the beast this weekend and start...

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

Yeah - starter is brand new, and all the leads were tight when I rolled under it the other day... They are new, but I will definitely load test the batteries. I'm hoping I can get this taken care of quickly - nobody likes a giant green lump in the driveway!

1028 with electrical gremlins (click when you twist the ignition)

First things first - yes, I have done a thorough search on the boards, but there are MULTIPLE opinions on what to do. Yes, I also have the -10 and -20 manuals downloaded, and even printed off the -20 troubleshooting steps for "won't start." That all said, electrical stuff is my $@%#^ Achilles...

Burned fusible link fixed it still no power

Dang - exact thing happened in my 1028, Merle, this morning. I spent the morning under the dash chasing shorts...let me know how it turns out!

New guy - hunting for a CUCV pickup

Got my 1028 home in one piece today! Woo hoo! Let the plotting, scheming, and collecting of parts begin!

New guy - hunting for a CUCV pickup

Hey guys - new to the site, but not to MV's (18+ years in the Army) I hunting for a gateway vehicle (1008 or 1028) that can double as a semi-daily driver, hunting vehicle, and yard/home improvement hauler. One day, when I retire, I'll buy an old deuce or 5-ton...but they are kinda hard to stash...
