Just to clear this mess up some..... I have seen gasket sets ranging from $270.00 up to and over $900.00 depending on where you shop. I have also priced individual head gaskets through tractor supply sources going for $100+ each. I got my gaskets from FreightTrain through the kindness of his...
Sure, and you can go to McDonalds for lunch easy and cheap.... I prefer to brown bag it myself. I know what is in the bag, cuz I made it:-D. Coopie out again...
I guess it depends on how much you can buy and have an engine delivered for. I am doing this in my spare time. I don't consider it a tough job, just time consuming. It is actually kind of fun for me when I get to do a job without having to worry about time.
Carb or Brake cleaner. Have a bucket of hot water with some dish detergent in it and a clean scrubber brush and have a hose handy. Spray area with solvent then give a quick scrub with the soapy water and rinse away. If you work quickly it will do a great job and there will be no fading or...
Thanks for the formula ENCS. I am sure it will be heplful for a lot of folks out there. I have a calibrated torque guage handy, so it is easy for me. Glad you have, and posted the formula. I am sure everyone will appreciate that very much, I know I did:-D. COOP
Also, I noticed that I didn't get a picture of the prepped block surface...Take my word, it was sparkly clean and dry before I installed the gaskets and heads. COOP OUT for now...
This adapter I made is the second "refined" version. It works very well, even around injector lines(have to move 'em some, but not bad). I reccomend if you use this design you compare torque specs with it on your torque wrench and with your torque wrench and a socket on one of the upper head...
Update... More pictures!!!
OK, Finally got a few hours to get some more done on this. For you impatient souls out there bear with me, I work on this when I can. I have read through some other threads like this and noticed there are some whiners from time to time if you ain't postin and writin'...
Got to hand it to ya...Looks great. Now that we have our own place I am looking for a lathe of my own so I can get some turning of my own done. Sure are handy. I have done similar center swaps with splits and fared ok just carefully centering and measuring. Like you said, it is very important to...
Crap...If it is a wrecker...Even if there are some bad components, I'd still throw a $2500.00 bid at it. Heck, maybe $3000.00 or more. If you invested some time and money in parts(if even necessary) you'd still be lookin' way good. I wish I would run into one of those deals around here on a...
I think all yards should look like such... Signs of patriotic American household [thumbzup]. Guarantee that the folks with "our" kind of rigs parked at "our" places don't wish "our" country was more like europe!!!! AMEN BROTHERS!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
Sorry...I have to do this....I always have to chuckle a bit when someone from back east claims to have mountains.... (by the way before you go off, I have spent plenty of time in and through the Cumberlands)....thoser foothills son...LOL
Thanks for the pix DesertFox . Looks pretty close to the wrench I made. I kinda went off the tm pix, but they are BW and grainy. Regardless...it worked fine and was inexpensive....most importantly....It didn't break. Not even close. I believe it could take 200+lbs. Coop
I use clean engine oil for components that require a specific torque setting on internal engine components. The only place I personally usually use anti-sieze compound is on components that usually will corrode or oxidate or lock up due to dissimilarity or temp....like exhaust fasteners, lug...
ok....ok....I'm getting to that soon 'nuff. I am a Hunters Ed instructor so all my spare time these days is spent in the classroom with the youngsters. "Bear" with me(get it?) I'll get some more posted. Does anyone want to see the wrench adapter that I made? COOP
I actually took a good quality 7/8" wrench. I heated it up at each end and bent the open end 90 degrees to match the bend I made on the closed end so I was right over the top of the nut. I welded a 1/2"dr. impact socket to the top of the open end, re-tempered the wrench and away we went. I had...
By the way... Does anyone have a good picture of the actual required wrench adapter for the short stud nuts? I made an adapter, it worked out well. I compared torque specs using the homemade wrench and just a socket and they ended up being close so it wasn't hard to adjust for the lower nuts.
RE: Re: RE: Moving on...
I would use gasoline for that project....Like the old timers used to do with hot rod exhaust.....They would have a spark plug plumbed into their exhaust tips somewhere and have a cylinder cut out switch so a cylinder or two would be pumping fuel into the exhaust then...
