Issue: My starter continued to run after the truck was turned off and think I lost a bit of magic smoke.
The truck:
1985 M1009 with 27MT starter
Doghead relay mod
ST85 GP relay
My truck had been turning over very slowly and the batteries were fine so decided that the starter needed to be...
I pulled mine apart and measured the cummutator end (away from the pinion gear) and it measured 0.560 inches. I found a local rebuilder here that carries the 24V parts and seemed to know about the vehicles so I am going to have him test it and buy some parts. Maybe a source for others in the...
I am on the same quest here and was getting ready to order from ASP. Their shop is closed until 06Jan2014. I already have my starter (27MT) off my 1985 M1009 and sitting in the garage. I may go ahead and start the tear down process. I had no shim on my starter when I removed it so wondering...
Surprised no one said check the tech manuals....or post 1980 kinnibling pin....or pre 1985 johnson rod...
I am going to have to go with plow angle cylinder too.
Pulled my starter on the start of my slow engine turnover and battery adventure.
Need to figure out which starter I have, get the right rebuild kit, and then decide what replacement batteries I will get. Leaning toward Group 31's. suggestions?
It does sound correlated that you put suspect fuel in and then the light came on but could be a wiring issue too. It's running but only you can determine the amount you want to chase it or how much you want to risk being stranded (sounds cold where you are).

I think you were absolutely right. I replaced the terminals today - the melted one and one that snapped in half when tightening it. These things are really poorly made these days. Was thinking about going to bronze instead lead terminals.
The 1009 started much better with the tightened...
There is also an adapter on the speedometer cable (see tm9-2320-289-34p - page 662 - item 8 ) which has a ratio gearing in it of about 1:1.25. You can run without the adapter but it will lower your speedometer reading by the ratio amount which is about what you are stating.
Those do look great! What suspension and/or transmission mods have you done? I have a bs
Ask ally stock 09 and would like to run that size but unsure if the th400 will take it?
M1009 - pulled the temperature sensor off near the back of the intake on the drivers side. Thought I might be able to find some numbers to cross reference to a new one but no luck. The parts store only has one with atop pinned outlet and mine looks like a coax cable connection.
I have been having a similar case with my M1009. Cold start - fine, immediate restart after running - fine, run for 15-20 minutes and let sit for 15-20 minutes - no start no matter how much you crank. I just tried taking the plug off the temperature sensor on the drivers side rear of the...
One of the first things I did to the M1009. I heard the horror stories of hanging relays and burnt starters. Seems to have helped the starting reliability of the truck. It used to not like to start when warm, I have not had that issue since. Better go check again now....
On the road again!!! Paid the bill ($1,020) and picked up the M1009. She is shifting great and running great. Price about included a master rebuild kit, removal, installation, and a new torque convertor.
For those in the Tidewater (Hampton Roads) area of Virginia, I used Rory and Sons...
