I thought I knew every part on an m38a1 . I was putting the clutch and bell housing back on. ran across this spring and cup. It was in my clutch and clutch linkage box.
Anyone know what it is and where it goes.

Well, as always, rather be lucky than smart.
bringing something like this back from scrap pile is always interesting. There is always a reason they were taken off line. Sometimes major problem, sometimes minor.
Somewhere along the line, someone re-wired the start circuit to work around...
Just picked up this gem... man is it heavy. 877 lbs of fun.
it has a 4 cyl flat head, water cooled, found a manual on ebay.
First thing is to see if it will run. then do a proper restoration.

pb blaster down the jugs, bug wrench on the crank and the engine broke free. Cleaned the carb out, temp fuel line, check the points, hot wire the coil.
Started after some patient cranking. Missed badly until bad plug wire replaced. One valve stuck which...

pulled plugs and sprayed some lube down the holes. Was able to turn the engine. hot wired the starter and moved the engine with the starter. any possibility this thing will run? Be fun to fing out.
