Mechanicals are done. Now switching to body.
The rough idle turned out to be a plugged low speed jet, and a vacuum leak at the vacuum pump
fixed the vacuum leak first (gasket not seated right), ran...
Carb question, surging at idle
I think I still may have a problem with carb.
The engine has a very pronounced surge at idle, almost kills, then revs up to about 1200, then almost kills.
ideas?
let me shoot a better picture. Interesting mystery. The pulley looks original.
Here is what is known about the jeep.
made in 54
rebuilt carb, axles, engine, gen at fort jax in 67

that smacks of a right answer. If you ran dual belts on the pully I have, it would wear one belt or the other.
I somewhere along the way, the pully was replaced.
wonder what it was intended to run? Did cj's ever have power stearing or brakes?
Here is one for you,
Does anyone know why the inner pulley on an m38/38a1 water pump pulley is a larger effective diameter than the outer pulley.
The outer pulley has a deeper V allowing the belt to ride deeper, making it a smaller effective diameter.
you might be able to make out the...
Now un-stopped.
Thanks to Alan Spearman and the right tool. imoveable object (taperboar), irresitable force (Alan's puller).
When it finally gave, it sounded like a .22 shot. Holy smokes. The other tool was not anywhere close to getting the job done.
Gentlemen, anyone reading...
Did make a little forward progress. Got the front drums over to Ken, he is an old Vietnam vet who has a little machine shop, does great work.
He turned them for me. They were pretty bad, but had never been turned before, so there was plenty of drum to deal with .
Bearings and races...
Ug, I hate taking a beating.
Borrowed the pictured puller. seemed substantial enough. Didn't budge either wheel. They are tight on there. Tried a little heat, and some tapping with a 2 lb hamer.
no progress. Got my but kicked.
Looks like some of the pullers you guys show are...
Got stopped dead in my tracks tonight.
The A1 I am restoring was in pretty good shape, not to look at, but mechanically. I got used to finding things in better shape than I expected.
Started on hubs and brakes a few days ago, they are a mess. Front hubs were very difficult to get...
Made some progress over the weekend.
Fired up the engine after a long hibernation since engine work and repaint.
Ran terrible. Missing, rich. wouldn't idle.
Trouble shooting rule 1
If it runs bad, its ignition. Check everyting, make it right, make it perfect.
Rule 2
If it still...
Great pictures Bill W. You had a few orig shots in there I had not seen. A couple look like they had M1 rifle holders mounted vertically on driver side front running board. had not seen that before.
Great pix
Your truck looks great. What year did you finish it?
Hey Ron,
Clutch not installed yet, I am still puzzling over this spring. Where does it go? There the driven plate is new (dampening springs intact, and none missing from the old one. The pressure plate has all its springs.
Where does this one go? I've got good tech manuals, can't...
Clutch spring makes sense, where does it go? Does not appear in the exploded view.
by the way Diesel bob, I love the Stangelove. a truly funny movie.
