Getting close now......
Needed some big progress over the last few weeks- the new jeep will be my daily driver for a while. My regular car is in the hands of the junkman.......
Final paint is done, starting on the details, lights, fixtures.
I need some help with the bows- how do the...
Hey gang,
doing an m38a1 in Navy gray. Markings planned out are on the sketch, basically,
Hood-
U.S. Navy
94-#
no star
windshield frame will say U S S Independence
Body side will say N.A.S Norfolk
The idea is to reproduce a "might have been jeep" at Norfolk shipyard, 1954-55...
Hey gang,
might as well throw this up for public scrutiny.
Doing a Navy jeep, here is what my searching turned up. USS Independence was at Norfolk Shipyard for updates in 1954. Plausible that a '54 38a1 would have been marked as I show in this pix.
Comments?
A little update, these pix show final paint for the body. Next step is to start the windshield, and work on wiring. I was able to restore a good bit of the original wiring- hard to believe. got the dried and cracked tape off and mostly found supple wires underneath. a few needed to be...
For all who asked, and are reading this. Yes I have a disconnect means to switch the panel over to generator. Without it, you would backfeed the util, and neighbors etc. a very dangerous situation indeed.
We had an incredible storm rolll thru last week, put down a huge pine which took out the util lies on our road. The storm hit at dusk.
Fired up the (1967) PU-286, set the field voltage, normal. Switch on the pre-electronics era voltage regulator, normal. (still not exactly sure exactly...
Next problem- The fuel tank is in decent shape, on or two small rust holes along seams at the bottom.
But the inside.......... ug. there must be a quarter inch of gunk on inside surfaces. It is putty knife type consistancy. Gasoline doesnt disolve it, nor water with purple power.
Any...
Paint was automotive lacquer based primer. Not ectching, but he metal was sandblasted, so it had a lot of mechanical grip.
1st color coat was Gilespie USMC olive drab semigloss (navy jeeps are OD under the gray)
top Color coat was Rustoleum, 2 quarts of semigloss white, 3 cups of gloss...
had a little nice painting weather this weekend. Got 2 coats of haze gray on. Came out very nice after, a near miss-step.
I mixed black, and semigloss white, and a little royal blue to color match fs 36270. The royal blue was latex. I blame Lowes, who intermixed the latex and enamels...
Haze gray appears to have been neutral gray, closely resembling FS-36270. Medium gloss gray, blue tint.
I cant find anything really difinitive, so I matched a navy instrument housing from the era.
Sprayed a color card with testors 36270, then clear coated the card with satin clear...
Progress shots,
The shots show new tires, rims painted, body on. The picture showing the rust thru area is the only body work I have to do, can you believe that? I am going to take care of all of the rust areas with a 1'x2' piece of 16 gauge.
The last time it was in service was 1972...
Aberdeen, nice weather. A few good deals; but mostly avoided shipping charges for heavy stuff
You can see the tires, a bumper, also got a lot of rubber parts, boots, grommets, B/O light bracket. \
Got a nice cargo cover for my 101a trailer.
Had a great time hunting around with my dad...
I am restoring an a1, and had the same desire, want it to be longer distance driver than some of the other MV's I have, but keep the military stock look, The pix shows a warn overdrive installed. these are very nice units, effectively give you a 4th gear.
I also think the "lever farm" looks...
Have a little progress to report, took the tub over to a friend of a friend with a 50hp compressor and lot of sand.
I went to pick it up, where there was paint, there was now pristine metal. The empty glovebox and toolbox now had about 5 lbs of sand.
Came out nice, I debated whether...
