IMO most of the military ratings are about 50% those of consumer grade stuff. I mean...clearly the deuce can carry more than 5K offroad, and 10K on-road. It's been demonstrated. The winch is no different. It's "10K" rating is pretty safe. It's easily 2x that in real life with the proper...
Most excellent Chris! It's really coming along well.
Would love to see the dented old pan....
Considering what you started with, this is amazing progress. I can't wait to see it tooting down the road!
Well, the 14.50s use a different bead than the 9.00s 11.00s, so while it may "work", it's not really making full contact on the bead putting them on a stock A2 rim and in my opinion is unsafe. See post #10 in this thread for the poop on this...
Here's the datasheet for the Michelin XL tires (as an example):
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PDFs/Michelin%20XL.pdf
As you can see, the 11.00R20s will fit on a 7.5-8" wide wheel. Stock A2 wheels will work fine for them.
OK, I found the post of that truck I was referring to earlier:

It's Readyman's old deuce...I believe he's sold it, but man is that sexy or what?
I got mine from Berg tire (BergTires.com Home Page - Thousands of Used Tires - Military, Industrial, Large Truck, Heavy Equipment) I think I paid $100 each, but that was a few years ago.
Note that the 11.00s and the 14.50s are almost exactly the same diameter (within a 1/4" or less). You can...
Not exactly on-topic, but for comparison here's my deuce with 14.50/80R20 tires (stock A3 tires) on OD Iron rims. Note that the hubs are not flipped for this conversion as the wheels are the proper offset when flipped around for front and rear. Also note that I just bought front-style lug nuts...
As I recall the boot is held in by the seal itself on the shaft. I believe you need to take the shaft out to change the seal/boot IIRC. I'm going by memory here...it's been a bit since i re-did mine.
OD Iron has an exploded diagram: http://www.odiron.com/store/images/7061272%20%28Small%29.jpg...
Do it yourself and learn a few things.
Here's a great book (I have a copy):
Amazon.com: How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission (Motorbooks Workshop) (9780879382674): Ron Sessions: Books
Get your kit, plus this book, and go to town on it. Save $$$, learn new stuff...
I have a set of those ARB lockers ready to drop in...any time now. :D I got 3 of the first crate that came in from Australia last year.
Seriously...they are going in soon. I'll do a full write-up. I'm looking at using some of the same air switches that control the front axle engage to...
I wish I could get SI plates for mine...but it's too new! Must be 25 years old (IIRC), which means 3 more years of commercial truck plates. :(
Oh well...I can haul what I want with those plates on it. :)
I'm going to re-locate my spare tire carrier/winch/thingy to under frame in the back, behind the pintle. Should be enough room, and will hold a 14.50R20 without much trouble. Might just give me enough room to mount a 2nd fuel tank. :D
Well, the laser is just a pointer. It's actually a non-contact IR thermometer. They are accurate and very handy to have around. Great for hubs and tires (a low tire will read hotter than a fully inflated one), and you don't even have to touch the target!
Super handy...for that price there...
I'm sure the military had reason to add a brace. A simple piece of tubing should be enough of a brace, as long as it's not going to interfere with the front wheel.
Now...to find a filter housing. :D
Hmm...I stand on my fender all the time (in fact, the USAF put no-slip paint on the top). *shrug*.
I wanted to to put the external filter on so I could plumb in an aftercooler in place of the under-hood air filter (think pusher-engine bus style cooler with heat-exchanger and front-mounted...
Sorry to hear about the forced sale Ron. :( I hope things turn around for you soon.
Here's to hoping it goes to a good home who will understand what they have. That's a piece of history you have there....
