*sigh* You are correct, this is NOT biodiesel, and it will tend to confuse people. Proper bio-d is vegetable oil that has been treated chemically to remove the glycerin (and some other things). SVO/WVO systems, either straight or in a mix, are a different proposition.
Unheated SVO/WVO is too...
Glad to hear it all worked out! I had to bond one of my parts cars for a similar reason; the title had passed through too many hands without the transfers going through the MVD.
Had mine off last summer. This year, didn't really get hot enough for me to want to, and it rained too much.
One thing I did notice was, you don't want to take off the top AND the tailgate. Makes the back end really wobbly.
I had a similar problem with my 1009; in my case, it started drifting to one side, and the hub on that side was getting extremely hot. I thought brakes, but it turned out to be the wheel bearings. When I pulled it apart, I found nasty grease in there, and not nearly enough of it. The other...
Buddy of mine wants to put one in an M101 trailer, add some landing legs, and have a mobile radio shack. He's almost as broke as I am though, so it remains a long-term project. :-D
I wonder if an S-250 could be adapted to fit in an M1009 (possibly with a dual rear axle) as a camper.
I had a major problem with this when I picked up my M1009. It was annoying enough that I bought some cheap mechanics gloves for the drive back. Since then though, it seems to have gotten less tacky as time goes by. May be related to humidity, or lack thereof in my case.
My guess would be that it is not possible to use a selector switch like that in a 24 volt CUCV, though hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
There are a few folks around who have spares. I think HAWKMAN said he had a few more when I bought the one I needed, perhaps he'll chime in.
It seems GM made a lot of 5-lug wheels, a lot of 8-lug wheels, and a relatively small number of 6-lug solid steel wheels. The 'rally' style seems common...
Ditto on the freeze plug heater. I don't have the NAPA part number handy, but mine came in under $30. I'd use a higher wattage one if I lived further north. I have also seen stick-on oil pan heaters, but I personally haven't used them.
I'd love to find a winterization kit, but they seem to...
Dang, why is it everyone is always on the other side of the country? I'd love to find a 1031 out here, or even just the SECM box, but they don't seem to show up much in the Southwest.
Yikes! Makes me want to go pull mine and check for abnormal wear. Buddy of mine picked up a civy Blazer where the front hubs had been left engaged full time 'for convenience' that now needs new front u-joints and possibly a transfer case rebuild.
Depending on when your M1009 got handed over to DMRO, that could be an accurate date. I've seen dates on radiators for fluid changes in the 95-98 range.
Why would it be inaccurate? It's not like there are many units still actively using these vehicles.
I'd throw some anti-seize compound on them when you put it back together, especially for the ones that connect to the cab. Those can be exposed to moisture when the seal between the cab and lid leaks, and they're a real pain to deal with when they rust.
'Reasonably priced' M1008's do exist, even on eBay from time to time. There is no 'reasonable' price for a 1028 though. And I dare not even mention the dually models....
I'd remove and replace the lower radiator hose unless you know how old it is. Not a good thing to have go out on you.
If you've got rust flakes coming out or an oily sheen on the drained coolant, you'll need to flush the system out, first with a detergent to get the oil, then with something...
What CARNAC said. If the insurance company can't/won't accommodate you, take your business elsewhere. Explain to your current company why you're leaving. Explain the situation to another insurer, and see if they'll offer the same rates as the other guys. I have my M1009 insured through...
My 2cents :
If you really truly want something you can hop in and drive away, do some minor PM and keep driving, don't buy from GL right away. Sure, you can find good runners on there sometimes. If you can preview the actual truck, or have someone do it for you, you can get a cherry specimen...
