Thanks, Guys. All those posts will help me. I can handle most mechanical issues, but electrical always fries my mind. ;)
I think I'm going to work on re-wiring her, once I find where to get the correct harness.
In the meantime, I need to find more information about this alternator...
I think that may be the case. I was definitely trying to start it for a good five minutes and not giving it much rest in between cranks. that helps me, mentally. thanks!
Background:
I purchased an '04 M1009 through an online auction a couple of months ago. It was not, and is not running. Body seems to be in good shape and then engine does not appear to be seized up. Transmission moves freely and the front lockers seem as though they may be functional. The...
Tried to start my '84 09 with two fresh batteries (Group 31's), new diesel, and new glow plugs. Battery cables starting smoking and I wound up with a small fire somewhere down near the starter. Glad I had my extinguisher with me. Guess it's time to clean every single electrical connection on...
I am finally frustrated with my truck. Today I drained The old diesel and replaced it with new.
I added two new group 31 batteries (Blemished from a large battery manufacturer here in Texas for $40 each)
Attempted to start her again and nothing.
I did get a nice electrical burning smell...
I got my rebuilt starter back this afternoon. I found out that the CUCV had been converted to 12V and the starter is a 12v.
Now that the starter is rebuilt, it is about time to go and try to start her again.
I attempted to start Whitey again, but still the starter would not turn over.
I decided to pull the starter and take it to a shop to see if it was good, after
I attempted to turn the gear inside the starter by hand and I could not budge it, so it might be frozen up. The shop I brought it is in...
NOS upper and lower radiator hoses came into today. I will finally be able to empty the radiator, flush it, fill 'er up, and try to get her started. She will have almost all new fluids, minus the brake fluid. I'm getting antsy and hope she will fire up fairly easily.
Patience, Grasshopper, patience. ;)
Nope...not yet...
I'm concerned about the wiring and want to make sure it's not all jacked up. After my radiator hoses arrive, I'll change out the coolant and then get brave with the electrical. Maybe it will cool off this weekend and I can attempt it. :)
Moderator: I have searched for, but can not find, how to remove the two attached thumbnail photos in my above posting. Can you remove, or can someone provide instructions on how to remove? Thanks.
K9Vic: thanks! That would make since. I'll get that documentation printed out and give a shot at re-wiring it correctly this time. I'm not a huge electrical guy, but I'm gonna give it a shot!
BTW...I appreciate ya'll's input, for sure.
K9Vic:
Thanks for the heads up on the electrical. I gave it a shot yesterday as far as connecting the batteries and hope I did it correctly. I just tried to use a little common sense and followed the cables to the firewall, to the chassis, and then to the electrical box and guessed from there...
Not bad....just the little things. I was afraid i wouldn't remember how to turn a wrench after 20 plus years, but its coming back...slowly. :)
Next, Once I find the drain valve for the filter I will work on the electrical and see if I can get her to crank.
