The idle speed seems normal, but this is my first diesel. I don’t have a tach.
The clunk is towards the front.
I think I’ll replace th u-joints since they could be 30+ years old anyway.
And I’ll take a harder look at the carrier bearing.
I seem to recall being able to wiggle the rear...
They looked OK, and I greased their zerks, those that had them. It occurred to me I could replace them and know they're good for sure.
I don't mind doing that.

My ride sometimes clunks, sometimes doesn't. I'm not familiar with the cause of this, and wonder if it's something I can address outside of a trans rebuild. (Please don't say it's a trans rebuild, oh please.)
My ride is a stock 1987 M998 with 6.2L NA and standard drivetrain. All fluids are at...
Congratulations! And now the cleanup begins.... I don't envy that mess shooting out of the cylinders. But once it's all out and wiped clean, it should rotate fine, one would hope.

That much Blaster should free her up. Perhaps crank bearings are stuck too? Have you put anything in the crankcase to try to help free her up? I'd try Mystery Oil there to see what it might free up.

Thanks for the compliments!
I'm checking with my previous source for surplus door frames. I'll PM you once I can confirm I can get salvageable frames to start with, and we can take it from there.

This morning I decided to modify my rear curtain to roll up tighter.
This involved cutting out the lumpy parts at the bottom corners where the seat belt mounts are. I then sewed Velcro in so they could be reattached when wanted.
I want to have the rear curtain in the event I remove my soft...
Bumped up the fuel pump on mine with the kind help of TheCaptain. Followed the guidance on the FlashOffroad site. It was straightforward but not simple dealing with the fiddly nuts and bolts while straddling the engine bay, but we got it. Truck drives noticeably better now. I’ll see how well she...
Because it traps moisture, you can expect earlier failure due to corrosion, but I've had good experience finding techs to re-pipe other vehicles for a reasonable price in the past (shop around, play one quote against the other) so I may do this too. You will get some criticism for suggesting...

Drive it again. Pretend to be inspecting the undercarriage, but really look for a hot caliper. If you find a hot caliper, note the speed limitation and wonder about the engine, let him come down in price, and rebuild the brakes.

It could be a while before I muster the gumption to try to sew a cover, but I'll keep ya'll posted.
Dump trailer? You mean mine? Howzat? Sure would have saved me time at the landfill...
Seriously, I better download the TM. I didn't think I needed one for a trailer!

Here is a tan version (the same one pictured above on my own green HMMWV for test fit above) mounted on a local member's ride for fitting. He's now petitioning CINCHOUSE for permission to buy...

Took Ownership!
Picked this up a couple of days ago from another SS member locally, 1962 M101A. He has sold off all his green toys as part of downsizing. Came with extra sides and gates, and a few other extras stuck in it he didn't feel like cleaning out. Hadn't moved in 4 years but was 100%...
Did some little things on the HMMWV, replaced the passenger seat back with an NOS non-rusty one I had on hand, then pulled a few more cut wires from the old comms install. I also removed a dozen empty wire loom mounts running here and there around the interior, again for the old comms package...
If the pick up point is within 100 miles from home, sign up with AAA Premium a week minimum before pickup. Then get to the base early, before your arranged pickup time and call AAA and tell them your truck (true, you bought it) won't start (also true) tell them you're sure it's not a jump start...
