islandguydon - Balance Masters are used by the U.S. military to automatically balance the entire wheel assembly of HMMWV vehicles. They consist of a thin steel plate which is installed between the hub and wheel, to which is mounted a captive steel tube containing 40 ounces of Mercury. At about...
Bob H - in fact, here in Kentucky during the winter months, it is either wet or snow with very little dry pavement. I have found that the key to performance with the NDT tread is to match tire pressure with vehicle weight. Running 11.00/20 NDT on my M1028, I have determined that 28-32 psi will...
Respectful Rebuttal to Bob H in Post #16 regarding NDT tread tires -
In 1985 I ordered a brand new K-30 civi Chevy SRW 6.2 diesel. I raised the truck 5" and had my machine-shop buddy build the 20" rims. I was undecided which type of tire to use, however I had access to some new 11.00/20 NDT...
sht2kll - I would completely purge and refresh all brake fluid to dot 5, and then make sure the rear proportioning valve is adjusted correctly. Instead of going into it here, please review post #75 in my rebuild thread http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/54469-kinda-got-carried-away-8.html...
donalloy1 - when you get your IP back, use your mirror as required and make sure the indexing stud on the pump rotor goes back into the mating slot in the engine gear. Then loosely attach the 3 nuts on the back side of the gear housing to hold the pump in place while you install the 3 bolts...
After reading this thread a few times, it finally occurred to me: The solution would be to use plain old pump diesel with a good diesel additive.
Just my 2cents.
If all you are trying to do is increase top end speed, the easiest and cheapest thing to do is increase tire diameter. Taller narrow tires will circumvent a lift kit. You might want to consider 9.00/16 NDT.
donalloy1, I just finished this procedure myself, so here are my observations and suggestions -
I will assume you have disconnected both batteries. If not, DO IT NOW. Lay an old blanket over them to prevent accidental arcing.
You must be very carefull when removing those 3 bolts behind the...
I will agree with jmassenga. The PowrLok will provide the best combination of traction and handling in the front axle. The Detroit Locker is actually dangersous in the front axle due to it's initial inability to allow the outer-radius tire to over-travel to compensate for turns. I know this...
I don't understand why anyone would want more than the Trac-Lok in the front axle. It gives you true positraction going straight, and provides for over-running when cornering.
Just my 2 Cents.
Having made that same trip more times than I can remember over the past 43 years, I would recommend a transmission cooler at least. The air at Eisenhour Tunnel is thin, and without a turbo you will be running kinda slow going up. The 09 will make it, but in the far right lane.
You hunting...
I raised my M1028 5" and tried to stay with stock steering. I used a drop Pitman Arm and a Dane 60 steering block. I had hardly any turning radius and he steering sucked like a big orange. So I went with ORD crossover steering and now the truck turns tighter than my wife's sports car...
July 27 2012 Update:
After a 5-month suspension of work on my M1028 due to a busy work schedule, I am back on the project. Over the past few weeks I cave completed the following:
* Complete rebuild of my original IP by Cincinnati Diesel Injection
* New NOS vacuum modulator valve on the side...
The proportioning valve is no longer available through normal parts sources. The only thing you can do is to obtain a replacement valve off a parts truck. There are several guys here on SS which have parts trucks. You may want to run a Parts Wanted ad in the classified section of the forum...
