How to turbo a 6.2 using 6.5 parts

Timber -- I just installed a '93 6.5 Turbo manifold on my 85 M1009, and yes the clearance between the manifold and the #4 and #6 injectors is VERY tight, even with 2 exh. gaskets I had to make sure the flare nuts on the injectors were horizontal, then even carefully grind a flat onto the...

    electric fan and tiny tach

Nice work. What kind of turbo setup is that? And what's the long silver box in between the turbo and intake manifold?

Running WMO in a M1008 CUCV

OK, first of all, diesel fuel is not a solvent, quite the opposite, it's an oil. Second, I'd be REAL careful putting any solvent (especially acetone but including gasoline) into your CUCV in any concentration. It would never happen in my truck. Sure way to damage the injection pump seals. WVO...

    "New Heads" Now issues.

I recently got a set of "rebuilt" heads on FleaBay, installed them and glad I did a compression test before re-assembling everything else 'cause the compression sucked. Took the heads off again and down to local machine shop, turns out EVERY INTAKE valve leaked. Exchanged this set of "rebuilt"...

are the right ones for the brush guard?

I agree with TXMYTX, those OEM carriage bolts suck. I didn't even try to unbolt them, just cut the heads off with a grinder. Replacements will be grade 8 hex bolts with nylok nuts, that won't ever strip out in the bumper.

    Some crazy fuel problems

Glad blowing out the pickup sock worked. Of course all that junk that was plugging the sock is now still in the bottom of the tank. So here's what you do: in the pass. rear wheelwell near the top of the frame, you'll see an extra hardline coming from the tank, that is capped off. This is a purge...

    Some crazy fuel problems

Before you go dropping the gastank, first try blowing out the sock with compressed air (into the fuel line, before the pump). If it improves for a while but then plugs again, it's probably junk in the tank plugging up the sock. You can also pressurize the whole fuel system from the IP back to...

Ya don't bother finding how it used to work, make it work now. Done-ski. Also, how do you feel about the deal on the motor? Share details.

    6.2 turbo oil pressure

Mine was running about 40psi down the road when hot. Where did you tap in for the turbo oil supply, at the plug on the side by the cooler lines or on the top in back of the driver's cyl. head? I've heard some people have oil-starvation problems when tapped into the cooler-line location, but it's...

    M1008 Transmission shifting late

Maybe a bad vacuum pump, or bad VRV? Mine had a bad VRV (the regulator on the side of the IP) that caused the same symptom. Either way, Get a vacuum gauge (cheap) and T into the vac. line in various places to check the vacuum. The needle will jump around alot, but should significant vac. everywhere

    Diy steering box brace

Hey 1TonCUCV, you mention PVC inserts in your rims, what is that, some kind of run-flat device? If you're breaking the mounting tabs off the steering box, maybe welding a little triangle from the side of each tab to the body of the gearbox would keep it together...

    It's TURBO TIME!!!

I'll second that, Epartsman. I'd also add to the list of do-it-now-or-regret-it-later: 6.5 Turbo O-ring head gaskets to replace those 25yr old originals ARP head studs I'm installing my turbo now, and you can bet these (as well as a DSG stud girdle and new harmonic balancer) have already been...

    It's TURBO TIME!!!

As for boost gauges. JCWhitney has mechanical boost/vac gauges for about $30. Thats what Im using.

    Diy steering box brace

Here's some pix of the steering brace I finished today for my M1009. I used the stock bushings on the steering box bolts to weld the pieces to. First made cardboard cutouts of the 3 pieces for the main brace, tack welded it together in place, then removed, finish-welded and painted it. Note...

New cylinder heads, and compression goes DOWN?!

Is anyone using thicker-than-stock head gaskets to lower the compression, and do you know what compression test PSI is normal in this situation?

New cylinder heads, and compression goes DOWN?!

Hardhead, Putting oil in the cylinders of a diesel with so much compression sounds a little dangerous. And it's not like I can distribute the oil 360 degrees with the heads on. I did however blow the cylinders clean with compressed air before installing the heads, which would have dried out the...

New cylinder heads, and compression goes DOWN?!

Hey corelokt, Ya I read your previous post about your situation. Maybe you should ask how hard the head swap is AFTER I get a running motor! But anyway, if I didn't already have the hood and fenders off, it would be easier to just pull the engine. With the front clip off, it's still alot of...

New cylinder heads, and compression goes DOWN?!

AARGH! So just replaced both heads with rebuilt exchanges. With the old heads the compression test results were all 300-360 psi. The new head gaskets are Felpro 6.5 turbo gaskets, +.010 thicker than stock (trying to drop the compression a little, since I'm adding a turbo). I expected the...

    Holy oil cooler lines batman!

I seem to remember there was a factory recall on the OEM flexible lines, and the dealership was obligated to replace them with updated models for free if the leaky ones were original. Might be worth investigating for anyone who still needs them replaced (mine were replaced before I read this...
