Im in the market for a paint job for my 1009. I woud shoot it but don't really have the space. Problem is only place I have found wants 1000 and I provide paint. That seems high to me.
I took my crossover to a Machinist friend of mine and had a boss drilled and tapped in it, cause I wanted that location and was to cheap to spend 20 bucks on a Humvee crossover...
Urethane bushings and new shocks all around for the 1009. Rides great! but did notice that all the tie rod ends were shot too... Rock auto parts on the way.
This is from the mil STD 889, the farther apart the two alloys are on the chart the more corrosion will be an issue.

Aluminum does rust. I promise. I am an 18 year Aircraft Technician and aluminum definitely corrodes. I would go steel, keep the metal the same, mix the two and you will get dissimilar metal corrosion, also known as Galvanic corrosion.
The 700 has a lower first gear, so you will be getting some of your low end back from the 4.10 gears, the difference should be negligible, unless you are towing 10,000 up a mountain, that seems like a great combination, the 4.10 and 700...

If it was loose enough that is just fell off, I would suspect that the shaft is buggered up a bit. I would replace it, 60 bucks at autozone is cheap insurance....
