Thanks for the pics, they really help.
The last one is a crossmember with skidplate?
What did you drive with the PTO?
I'm going today (provided it's not pouring down rain) to the junkyard to check on a few clutch assemblies I saw in trucks last week. I didn't pay attention to see if they...
Once you've got the dash off, it's not too much harder just to pull the whole instrument cluster. It's only 6 or 8 more screws. The hardest part for me was to unplug the speedo cable. Small hands and forearems makes it easier. Once you've got the cluster out, you can change all the bulbs at...
84, that would be great.
I'm checking out CK5 (already a member there but looking for a good swap thread). Hydraulic clutch wouldn't be a problem, the only thing I've got is the bellhousing for a mech clutch so I could go either way.
I drove an M1114 in Iraq and it could barely get out of it's own way. It certainly couldn't stop itself without using the parking brake.
Nice vehicles in that collection... I'd love to have an M113 APC.
I just found out the hard way that the plastic glued-on wiring harness on the back of the instrument cluster can break/crack/fail, leaving various lights and gauges INOP. Try pulling the cluster out and tracing/checking the wiring to the gauge.
RE: SM465/NP205 swap, what
I only was considering a tilt column b/c I'm 5'7" and I usually find tilt to be more comfortable in most everything I drive. However, the natural tilt that's in my truck now isn't bad at all. So, tilt isn't a requirement by any means. What sorts of problems did you have?
OK gents, long term goal is to swap an SM465/NP205 combo into my truck. I already have the trans/xfer combo sitting in the shed. I believe it's from an '81 model, which would make it a mechanical clutch assy.
Here's what I have:
Bellhousing
Clutch fork
SM465 (unknown spline counts)
Shifter...
Check out www.expeditionportal.com they will have some really good tips on what to take for extended backcountry travel. Many on that site have done Baja. You should be able to find some very detailed lists of what to take, both vehicle maintenance (spares, fluids, belts, etc) as well as...
Re: RE: Factory dummy lights
Well, that's what we ended up doing. We started by checking the fuse, then the switch behind the parking brake, then we removed the dash and pulled the bulb (it was ok) then we pulled the instrument cluster. A bunch of the connections in the plastic wire harness...
Mine are still attached to the bed, but I plan on ditching the bed anyway so I don't mind removing them. However, a few pieces of flat stock have been welded across the bed, attaching to the tiedowns. I'm assuming this was for extra strength. I can take pictures if you would like. These parts...
Gents,
Can you tell me what the factory dummy lights are on the CUCV trucks?
I specifically need to know what the ones around the speedo/fuel gauge are. The ones I've seen so far are 4WD and WAIT. I know that some civilian trucks from this era have the BRAKE light underneath either the speedo...
Here's the pics from the original Ebay ad. I'll take some more as I start to get familiar with this truck, and make some repairs and upgrades.
Front views -
The camera angles don't do a good job of showing exactly how tall this truck sits off the ground.
This may be some surface rust...
They're coming, they're coming, I'm at work!
Took it to the shop today and it failed inspection, but all for little things! Horn relay, needs rear view mirror installed, needs groundwire fixed on driver's brakelight, and needs brake trouble / parking brake indicator light installed. Previous...
Got my truck!
Won an auction on Ebay and picked up a 1986 M1008 with 36K miles (the more I think about it, the more I wonder if this is one of the converted M1008/M1028 trucks). It's had some modifications, and I don't plan on a military restoration so this truck was perfect for me.
6.2L...
Hey fellas,
Don't post much (lurk all the time, though). Can you guys help me estimate how many inches of lift are on this truck? It's an M1008 running 38" super swampers. The fenders have been trimmed some.
Thanks!
One thing I thought was neat on the FMTV is the electric fan cut-off for fording operations.
I'll see if I can dig up my photos of fording an FMTV through a river, depth of the water up to the bottom of the driver's door! I was teaching my squad about off-road driving.
I was stationed near a bunch of Marines (on the phase line at FOB Abu Ghraib where Army and USMC coverage overlapped). The Marines were using 5 and 7 ton trucks as guntrucks, many were upfitted with M2s, Mk19s, SAWs and M240s. IIRC, the 7T truck was an International with an uparmor kit. They...
Thanks guys! What are some of the main areas to watch on an M1008/M1028 in terms of problems, so that I can look there first during an inspection? I.E. What are the msot common failure/problems and how to recognize them?
