My Chevy does that too. Top 1/4 on the gauge is 1/2 the capacity of the tank.

I've used both diesel and gas. Both seem to work fine. Gas is extremely effective and you don't need much. Diesel less so, but both seem to thin motor oil a ton even in small ratios.
