Recently did this myself. The swap was pretty straight forward. Here are a few things to be aware of.
Inside measurement of wheel wells is narrower on the trailer bed. Problem if you want to haul plywood or a camper.
You need to plan something for your tail lights. I used L.E.D. ovals...
FWIW, I was apprehensive about purchasing the TWF inserts due to cost. I am very glad that I purchased them instead of wasting time sourcing the material and fighting fitting them up. Nice machining and well worth the money.
Update
So I figure it is about time for an update on the ol truck. I have done quite a few things to it over the last 2-1/2 years, focusing on reliability repairs and upgrades. In no particular order....
Doghead mod
AC 60's
Glow plug resistor bypass
New glow plug relay
Glow card bypass
New...
They are a trial set of 37"s on Ford 16.5 steel discs. I am eventually going with 12 bolts. The fenders were bent up from GL so I cut the fenders to see how well the 37s would fit with no lift. I ended up replacing the front springs, shackles, and bushings with stock height springs and...
This is the only one I have so far. It was a rpetty straight forward process. If you look carefully, you can see the GM tail lights zip tied to the bumper!:-P
On my M1008 I added a junction box, fed that via a civilian harness plug, then ran wiring to 7 way plug. I also added a class V hitch and a brake controller. As others have said, it is a slow ride.
I was quite glad to have it (and at the angle it was at) when I had to load the shredded tire in!
So, I am obviously in the market for a tire if anyone has one out there. Even though I "blew" my budget this weekend on goodies.
The drive home was fun. After taking 4 hours to get to Seattle because of traffic, I got a break from driving when my right steer tire blew.
Now where did I put that jack....
I chose to scour Craigslist and found a 24 volt ReadyWelder mig welder for a reasonable price. I picked up a slave cable plug and wired it up like the military versions. All in all, a pretty slick set up for about $300.
I hacked my fenders to fit 37's on Ford steel wheels with no lift. The tires rubbed the firewall area during turning. I replaced the front springs(stock), HD shacles, & bushings. Raised front 2-1/2" and no more rubbing.
