Thanks guys. Yeah, maybe a 5 ton. Bill, the paint is Gillespie 383 CARC substitue. I bought from Rapco in TX. 54reo, thanks for the kind words. Gimp, something green is on the horizon--for certain! Lee, you need to pull the trigger man!
Allan and I went over to see James' new acquisitions. James is a real nice guy--met his son too. Many of the parts on his deuces are brand new! Nice morning.
Anybody win those 5 ton tractors (XM818?) in Jax on GL? Auction ended yesterday and the prices were just $1000 one hour before close. Just curious--if I'd had the space (and the wife's permission) I would have bid. Yeah, I'm whipped!
RE: end of month expected home
Joe,
I sure am envious! That is a beautiful and USEFUL truck! I want one. Bet you're chomping at the bit to get her!
Steve
Thanks for the quick response guys. Hard to turn eh Dave, and bad mileage Clinto. Okay. I may pass. I looked at it today. Wiring is alll hacked up, no bed, 160,000 miles, running condition was unknown. No rust on the cab or frame. Had the original 24 volt military alternator still in its...
I'm new to this beast and have an opportunity to buy one. What do I look for to make sure I'm getting a fairly good truck? Rust--of course. I understand the engine is a 318. Are the axles, transfer case and tranny rugged? Gear ratios deep? Thanks for any pointers on what to look for.
Steve
Allan, Mike,
Thanks for the compliments. That is very kind of you to say! Where you headed exactly? Will I get the business if I show up but don't get muddy (ha ha)?
Steve
No one really interested so I'm keeping it for now. I suppose fuel prices and cheap GL auctions are partly to blame. I'm kind of glad it worked out this way. I would have regretted selling. So come on over and take a gander!
Steve
I know it's a lame post, but I still enjoy the heck out driving my truck! Took it to the next city to our north on back roads, about an hour. Drove great. Such a joy to drive!
Interesting responses. Lee, thanks for offer to buy me fuel--that is what you've offered right (Ha!)? FrankUSMC, I will do that from now on. Sounds logical to me about the brakes. Okay, so I know not to simply idle it, now how often should I drive it? Once per week/month? Don't worry and...
Okay, fuel is high but I like my deuce and want to keep her. How often should I drive her to keep her in working order? Is idling in the drive acceptable? If so, how long--to operating temp? Driving once a week or once a month??
Shep,
I asked the same thing a few days ago. Bjorn turned me on to this: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/index.php?set_albumName=album31&id=ps212_p12_13_Alternator_battery_generator&name=gallery&include=view_photo.php Check it out, it was very helpful.
