I was just doing some research on the willysmjeeps database and came up with a possible hood number for you. The acceptable method, if you don't have your real number, its to use the prefix for the time period plus your serial number. The prefix would be 2010 for late Dec. '53...
Which ones, serial or hood? I'm not real sure about either, as I haven't really gotten into much of the history part yet - I'm still just restoring right now. I think they went up to 1964 production year, but I think those were USMC

My MD74431 is dated 7/54 and my MD75910 is dated 9/54. Unfortunately, the govm't destroyed the records when they were surplussed. Wes, at Willy's Military Jeeps is keeping records of members #'s, and can give you a general number range.
You're definitely right about getting harder to put money into hobbies! We just found out last week that the plant is going to be shut down on holidays, and that we are probably not going to be covering vacation days, so that is a MAJOR cut in my hobby fund!

The outside looks decent, so maybe it won't even need blasting (if it looks good from the inside - the floors definitely need it though. Paint is cheap - do it yourself and save. Might be worth checking out.

Yeah, you'll have to do some soul searching and decide if you want to put out the extra money at the beginning, or pay a you go - either way, it's going to cost. But starting out with a good base is always better.
