I'm on my cell phone right now, so I can't type too much. Waiting on the front porch for the truck to arrive. Will post a lot more later! I'll try to at least post a cellphone picture when it gets here. I'll post a metric crapton of pics on my web page by the weekend!
That picture just gave me a silly idea. If I ever build my custom cab hard top for my shelter carrier HMMWV, I could build a lean-to tent between the windshield and shelter roof, then sleep on the cab roof. The slanted tent might even cut down wind resistance on the freeway.
Thanks for finding a picture! It's hard to say without seeing it up close and in person, but it looks most likely to be there for thermal reasons to me. It looks just about right to form an air gap between the outer plate that bakes in the sun and the top of the actual shelter roof.
I haven't seen those, but I understand that my shelter was equipped to have a tarp suspended several inches above the roof to keep sunlight off the top. Maybe the metal plate is a more permanent version of the same thing? I don't have the support arms or tarp for my shelter, but the mounting...
This one made me laugh! I stare at my toys sometimes, too. And sometimes I even find myself staring at things I design at work. A new circuit board or injection-molded plastic piece will arrive, and I'll just ogle it, thinking "hey, I made that!".
The hole with the grommet is for the antenna cable. I hadn't noticed the other large hole with the two adjacent screw holes before. I'll try to remember to see if my trucks have it, too.
Yes, that is how TM numbering works. If there is -24 manual, then there won't be a -34. Or a -20, -30, -40, or -23, for that matter. The -24 covers everything from the second repair echelon (unit support) through fourth echelon (general support).
I'm glad that you found your problem, and the...
Hi. Those aren't deuces; they're 5-tons. "Deuce" is short for "deuce and a half", which refers to the 2-1/2 ton cargo rating of the 2.5-ton trucks.
Of the trucks you listed, only the A2 variants have a turbocharger, but I don't know if it whistles much. The other ones have normally-aspirated...
I haven't paid any attention to civilian H1 prices, but if you can get a running one with a good drivetrain for $10k, that sounds like a cheaper starting point. There are some differences, but the basic body, frame and drivetrain are about the same, I think.
Several hundred USMC surplus HMMWVs were released to the public through dealer-only auto auctions in Riverside, CA and Atlanta, GA back in 1999, if I recall correctly. Those trucks are now in the hands of private owners all over the US. Mine is one of the Riverside ones. They're out there if you...
