Can you service them "in the can"? I'm going to stick my old one back in the shipping container when I swap them out and put it in the bed of the truck for now since I have nowhere else to put it. But, I would like to get into it and fix what needs fixing and sell it to try and get a few bucks...
Prices are all over the place. I found a rebuilt unit in the crate from a fellow SS member here near KC. I've seen rebuilt units listed (not necessarily sold) for anywhere from $300 to $900. Take-outs are in the same range (which is silly).
I would shop around and find one for less than $400.

Stick your finger in the drain hole and feel around on the left and right of the hole. There are low spots there where "stuff" can collect. The "stuff" I found is pictured in the link above.
First off, cool truck and you obviously did a ton of work. I applaud the effort and the imagination.
If you want some critical feedback, though, the sheetmetal work on the rear looks a little shoddy in some of your pics (attached). I understand it was for a movie and it all depends on what...
Turned fuel up a half-turn. Didn't want to go any further since I don't have a pyro yet. It puts out a little more smoke at the shift points, but is still clean at idle and WOT without load.
Also took her to the car show at the square in our little town. It was a HUGE hit. All the guys with...
You're probably right, but it's exactly what was in there from the military, including the lack of inserts, so it's good enough for now. If it leaks, I'll get better stuff and fix it.
It's probably been covered elsewhere, but I just wanted to stick another post out here for the search gods. My truck has been hard to start since I got it. Usually taking at least two attempts and 10 seconds each. Holding the pedal to the floor and letting the in-tank pump run helped, but it...
Good advice. Went for a drive and it was still sluggish at first, even after getting good and warmed up. However, I was able to squeeze another 8 gallons of clean diesel in the tank and that made an almost immediate improvement. I'd say I got about half of the power loss back within a couple...
Pulled some fuel out of the primary filter tonight and it's running much thinner. I think one of the biggest problems was dumping all that WMO in on top of the diesel and not mixing it up. After driving it last night and letting it sit (and adding some gas) I think it's had a chance to mix and...
I definitely will, this was just sort of a one-off deal to dispose of some old goop. I did leave some in the bottom of each jug, so hopefully that helped reduce the amount of sludge (and the pantyhose caught a lot of "stuff" too).
So, is the issue that the stuff is just too thick (due to poor filtering) to flow properly through the system, regardless of the filters? They were all changed just a couple weeks ago. If I get it thinned out some, do you think it will flow better even without changing the filters again?
Well, I don't plan on running WMO much. Just enough to dispose of my oil change waste from our daily drivers and the deuce. I just happened to have a bunch built up from the past year before I got the deuce so I figured this was a good way to get rid of it.
I'll try topping it off with gas...
I'm starting to think the gear oil was a bad idea :) I guess the fuel is just not flowing at the same rate as before. Sounds like I need to burn through this stuff as quickly as possible and get some new filters in there.
