Best on line source for the manuals on the later M916 (A1 and up) models, based on the Freightliner chassis, is www.jatonkam35s.com. John has posted the full range of manuals for the complete run of the M915 vehicles. There is very little crossover from the CCC chassis to the Freightliner...
Check out the hand brake wheel on the side of the trailer tongue- only used on the earlier M172. The ramps also appear to be add-on along with some extra material on the deck.
Very sharp rig. Can't see the rear of the trailer too well, but it looks like a M172(A1?). It is a real survivor, as most were built in the late '60"s and they are still coming out on GL. As the replacement trailers got longer and longer, the M172 was still handy for its short deck (25 Feet) and...
Unfortunately, it's not the distributor shaft that is off. It has a flat/off center key that will only go in one way. It is the adapter below it that that is off from the drive gear. Don't think that is accessible except when you drop the pan. For the distributor itself, it looks like from your...
The grinding on the distributor body is to compensate for the mismatch by a tooth or so of the drive gear for the distributor connection in the crankcase. At some reassembly of the engine they were not quite matched for TDC and as a result there is not enough swing in the distributor to adjust...
The Detroit is outstanding, a quiet 1400 ft.lb. machine. The terrain here is not unlike your country side, up and down with only two pieces of straight flat road that I know of in the whole northern part of the state. Hence the need for torque. On the gearing side, 55 is ok all day long, running...
I'll certainly get to Sussex, the 700 mile r/t for the 916A1 depends on finding a set of fresh 14:00 X20's in time to cut the engine revs down. So, will we see your A-frame on the M37??
Thanks,
The surplus kits seem to have lots of flexibility for positioning parts with the components built separately. There have been plenty of the M915A1 models released with the A/C upgrade so there should be Big Cam 400 compressor brackets around.
Install continued..
The condenser is easy- freightliners have 4 studs waiting for it across the bottom of the radiator!
The receiver/drier requires a mod to the bracket as the spare tire mount is different from the M915A2 version.
Installation of the compressor again is straightforward with...
What better time than this old time winter to hunker down in the shop, wood stove going, and work on an A/C installation. After my first summer with a M916A1 and frequent envious glances at the descriptions of the $ unobtainable A2 and A3 versions with A/C, I started to look at the options...
Wonderful sized "pocket" dump truck. Had one years ago and was great for getting into tighter spots. Best feature is naturally the Reo Gold Comet engine - high speed, wet sleeves, 7 mains- a real truck engine that turned the industry on its ears when it first came out in civilian use (49-50?)...
Regularly available on ebay is a cheap copy of TM9-2330-211-14 covering the M172/A1. Has the parts blow-up and listing. I went through the brakes on mine last spring and found some of the parts getting harder to get- checking with couple of suppliers was needed.
Just looking into the same deal with super single options for the M916A1. The truck now sits on 11:00's. The 14's fit the hubs fine front and rear on 5 ton combat wheels (DT) in pictures. The rears are about 1 1/2" closer in than the fronts. Might look into spacers or perhaps different wheel on...
Looking good already- fresh paint will always a plus.
Are those 16:00 X 20's, if so what wheels did you use, and do they line up well front to rear?
Thanks,
John
In the 915/916 series it is set for 400 horsepower at 2100 rpm, with 1400 ft. lbs. torque at 1200rpm. Civilian applications often go up from these figures.
In addition to the aircraft and firearm world, Pony was very active in the early days of the start of the current military vehicle club. He would show up at the meets with beautifully restored half-tracks and then enthusiastically share lots of technical and parts information with us newbies...
Agree completely with the shifting drill for the Allison - thanks for the tip on preselecting the drop down gear prior to the meat of the hill. After years of a hill in the 5 ton meaning 5th down to 2nd in the main, finishing off in xfer low range 2nd, then climbing back up the ladder to top...
With a tag-a-long you might not notice it is there! Been pulling a M172A1 and have learned a little about this model Allison-it appears to be set up to work with full throttle up to your target speed (when loaded). Smoothest shifts work out this way- not with the throttle feathering you might...
