That is my plan for this one. To set up a few model trains inside it for my grandkids to play with, And have sleepovers in with their mom! A kind of family guesthouse.
I was originally going to make a full scale 1 to 1 "replica" caboose, but then found this real one on Ebay for less than it...
Congratulations on the upgrade Nate, at only 183 miles between us, We could talk two meter SSB 9 days out of ten, And two meter FM every time there is an opening across the lake, Which in the summertime is frequent! String up a 75 meter dipole and you will have great coverage all around the...
I got an old wood caboose on Ebay of all places! #20 from LS&I, Lake Superior & Ishpeming. Shipping cost more than the car. Frame was built in 1896 as a coal tender, And when they went to larger steam engines in 1932 they converted it to a caboose. Got the outside pretty well fixed up right...
As already mentioned, With the stock gearing (4.56-1) Mileage is not the best, Nor is highway speeds very good...... Since they do have plenty of power, You would need to re gear for good highway use. (I get well over 20MPG with my M1009 that has 3.09 gears)
And my M1031 does good too, But...
Most of the M1031's I have seen are missing the welder. Since the generator produces 3 phase power, You can just buy one of the surplus 3 phase generators on the market that sell dirt cheap because the average person cannot use them. I found some Miller CP 200 wire feed welders cheap for mine.
Although backing up with the mirrors supplied on the M1031 is not too bad, It is impossible to see directly behind it.
Places like Walmart sell those little TV cameras and monitors that give you a great rear view for under 100 bucks. Plus they work good for backing up and hooking up to a...
Depends on how fast you like to drive........ As pointed out, 55 is about IT. It is lots more comfortable to go about 45 to 50 with the stock gears and tires.
The stock set up has MORE than enough power! I expect for on road use you could put any gear ratio in you like and still have more...
I used the PTO driven generator on my M1031 to run a (Non military) Miller CP200 welder. Works great.
I LIKE this truck! As already pointed out, PERFECT for doing some work away from the workshop.
There is just no comparison between the M37 and the newer Chevy CUCV trucks! Driving my old M37 Dodge was always a no fun event.
Driving the automatic transmission, Power steering M1009 or M1031 is a true joy!
So if you want the old time looks, Go do the swap. But for me, I will just...
Story I heard was that the Wisconsin gas powered generator was from the old Dodge CUCV series maintenance trucks that someone (Military) installed in the newer Chevy CUCV. And most all Chevy CUCV series trucks came with the PTO driven 12KW generator.
Got my M1009 for just under 3K, First M1031 close to 4 K including shipping, Second M1031 for just under 3 K including shipping. All from private parties, All running and driving.
First M1031 with the PTO generator (With only 36 hours on it) And original air compressor,
Second M1031 missing the...
I never thought much of the CUCV's, Finally my son talked me into getting one, So I got a M1009, Liked it so much he didnt have to talk too hard for me to search out a M1031.....
And as pointed out, One isnt enough! After searching a long time to find the first one, I stumbled into another...
Nice looking truck! I was very surprised at how well my M1031 handles compared to an ex ambulance that had dual real wheels. Feels like driving a medium size pickup truck.
Same body parts problem happened to me. A friend of mine had an old K5 Blazer out in has back field down for the count for years. When I got my M1009 I called him to see if I could get some parts, The WEEK before he junked it! ARRGGHHH
How old is your fuel? Diesel fuel "keeps" lots longer than gasoline, But it still will go bad after enough years. Is this a truck you just got that has been stored a long time?
Nice looking truck. My limited knowledge of how they handle is that it seems to me the trucks with dual rear wheels handle pretty "clunky" and with single rear wheels they handle pretty nice.
I agree that metalic type paints are a no no, If it were mine, I would paint a plastic plate or other non conductor item that could be used as a cover (Underside) with your proposed paint, Just duct tape that over the antenna and see how it works before you paint the actual item......
