It’s nice to see someone upgrading their M109.
I’ve gotten stalled because of $$ and the lack of a job, but I am planning to do a renovation on mine so that I can pull stuff out and have it completely open. What I am planning to do is pull off all the interior paneling and finding out where...
Did any of you realize that it is not invisible to color blind people, just like the Army's new digital camo on BDUs? I had to get my wife to view the video to figure out what the big deal was.
I was
I was looking into a ’54 M109 but didn’t bid because of freight costs from MD to CO; an M109 is 11’ tall. I did find out a bit about those old power trains, though. This is 2nd hand, so guys who speak 1st hand might want to correct me.
The truck I was looking at had an automatic...
I was gonna stay out of this one, but finally got sucked in.
I grew up off roading in Western Colorado and ALWAYS favored NARROW tires. Then I moved to the Eastern Slope and found out that “ALWAYS” isn’t always right.
The difference was that all of the high country off-roading I used to do...
You can but it is probably not worth the trouble.
I have 2 M105A2 trailers and an MKT-85 on the same chassis. The cranks are hard to use at best, so I use a HiLift or farmer's jack. CAUTION: A HiLift or farmer's jack can be dangerous, so always be careful. Remember that when there is less than...
We had a deuce with a quad 50 pull into FSB Moore one night. I was the 1/11th Arty Bn. surveyor and I laid it like a regular artillery piece. That night it fired on coordinates with no tracers in the belts. Awsome!! It had a 2nd deuce with it for ammo.
Ditto on all the bleeding info; ONE MORE THING: Drain the air tanks at least once before starting out. The 109 in my avatar had soft brakes, 1/2 pedal, at Ft. Riley when I picked it up but I didn't know what to do. Fifty miles later they completely failed in heavy traffic. It was a pucker...
I have a 101 that I bought as "residue". It was missing the tongue, both wheels/tires and 1 brake drum. I cut the hubs off and welded on the front hubs from a '75 Bronco. That did reduce the weight capacity a bit, but it makes it so that it uses the same 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern as our '61 Willys...
I Googled sasafras (spelled correctly) and found all kinds of uses for it, except lumber. I'll look for it at the local lumber yard.
Nice looking work, barrman and armada. When mine is presentable I'll post some pics.
My 101 was 'residue' and was missing the tongue, both wheels/tires and 1...
Take a look at American SuperLite:

Many of their lights have a voltage range of 12 to 38 volts which means that they can be used on either 12 or 24 volts. I plan to put a set of these on the M101 I'm building up for use behind my Jeep truck.
Here's the link to a thread of great interest to someone wanting to bring an MV back from overseas. You might PM 1943ht and find out some of the details about getting that done.

Pull a Radar O’Reilly, mail it home piece-by-piece.
In ’68 we had an M37 with a stripped transmission and were unable to get parts. We sent one of our wreckers up to a junkyard near Saigon to see what we could find. The motorpool Sgt. sent them to a particular truck and told them to take the...
What do you guys suggest for wood in the bows and sides that needs replacing?
I got a set a few months ago from my 'civilianized' M101 that really needs help. In fact some of the wood is gone.
Don't spend any money until you have cleaned ALL of your connectors. This means:
1) All 4 battery connectors
2) All cable connectors from the battery to the relay and to the starter
3) The ground strap connecting the power train to the frame; I believe on a deuce it is on one of the engine...
I bought a scrapped out M101 a year ago. It was missing both wheels and tires and 1 brake drum as well as the tongue assembly.
I cut off the military hubs and replaced them with front hubs from a '75 Ford Bronco (full floating hubs) so that I would have the same tires as the vehicle towing it...
I can't tell you anything about the Good Bad Ugly, but I can tell you a similar story. I served with 15th Combat Engr. Bn, 9th Infantry Division in 1968. We (9th ID) were the first (and only) unit to hold ground south of Saigon and the 15th was in the vanguard to Dong Tam.
Being combat...
The brushes are probably shot. That's how one I disected ran. One brush was completely gone and the other was down to a nub. The comutator was real bad, keeping me from rebuilding the motor.
A 4 amp slow-blow fuse sounds advisable; 10 amps is a lot of juice and realistically those wires aren't...
