Two kinds of block heaters. One is a little coil that goes in place of a freeze plug, the other goes in a heater type hose and pumps hot water into the block, usually by convection.

Your A3 makes the job easier. You already have power steering and I personally think the auto tranny is a plus, esp with the transmission temp gauge and the 2 speed transfer case.

If it is near grid power don't worry about the battery charging. Get a charger/monitor or two. When running you can plug them into the convenience outlet.

Best to find it before you break it down IMO. I fill it with air and "borrow" one of my wife's spray bottles. 1 teaspoon detergent, rest water and start at the valve core, next tire beads then tread. It is coming out somewhere.
Once you find it mark it so you know where to work.
